Memorial of an Inquiry review
Posted : 9 years, 3 months ago on 16 August 2015 04:34 (A review of Memorial of an Inquiry)"Playing around with archives is one way for artist to examines history facts. They often manipulate archives to explore and clarify. The idea is to reflect the past to understand concept that has not been fully comprehended, that history conveyed information and politics glued with biased and human memories.
This archive tells a story about Tasaday tribe. A hoax that emerged in the 70’s created by Marcos government to distract people’s attention from the reality of how the world viewed the Philippines at that time. The archive was being showcased in several renovation sets, reinterpreted, and re-examined through three-screen cinema. The archive was re-presented from the vault, to create possibilities for us to change our understanding over things. What comes out later was the question, was Tasaday a hoax or was the idea of a hoax is a hoax itself? So, where is the truth? The answer probably lies in between facts and fictions which all seek attention."

Ang magpakailanman review
Posted : 9 years, 7 months ago on 24 April 2015 09:16 (A review of Ang magpakailanman)It’s about a young man named Juan who suffers from crucifixion nightmares when asleep, endures the contempt of a fat man in an old office when awake, and is followed around by mysterious woman in a black veil. Later he searches for a book, "Ang Magpakailanman," which has the power to grant immortality--sort of like Roman Polanski’s The Ninth Gate on a smaller budget and wilder imagination. The film, which Red shot, wrote, and directed, went on to win the 1983 Experimental Cinema of the Philippines’ student film competition, and is listed in the Cultural Center of the Philippines Encyclopedia on Film as one of the significant works of Philippine cinema. Not bad for a budding filmmaker only seventeen years of age.- [Link removed - login to see]

Anino (2000) review
Posted : 9 years, 7 months ago on 18 April 2015 06:56 (A review of Anino (2000))In Manila, a solitary man from a far-away province lives in poverty. The only thing he has is a camera, and he stays at churches hoping people will hire him to take their photographs. During one day, he has three encounters that change his life: the first, with a smooth-talking young man who's standing by the church door who berates him for wasting his life in church, the second with a boy who offers to take his picture, and the third with a Mercedes-driving man who's been stuck in traffic and has no patience left. Is there any deliverance from the soullessness of the city?

Qwerty review
Posted : 9 years, 7 months ago on 16 April 2015 09:07 (A review of Qwerty)The title refers to the imperfect keyboard style that can no longer be changed due to its universal prevalence. Just like corruption in the police force.
Loosely based on a actual police torture video in Manila, this gritty police drama portrays a cop on his last day of duty. On this fateful night, a petty cellphone-snatching case goes all wrong as a surprising twist arise somehow implicating him to a potential police scandal.
He tries to complete his final police report, sealing his fate - whether as fall guy or whistleblower, to the very institution he is leaving behind. - IMDb
