Ito ay naging lungsod sa bisa ng Republic Act 9026 o mas kilala bilang "An act converting the Municipality of Tanjay, province of Negros Oriental into a component city to be known as the City of Tanjay".[3] Ang Batas ay inaprubahan at nilagdaan ni Pangulong Gloria Macapagal Arroyo noong Marso 5, 2001. Ang batas na ito, na isang konsolidasyon ng House Bill No. 8880 at Senate Bill No. 2256, sa wakas ay naipasa ng House of Representatives at ng Senate noong Pebrero 8, 2001. Sa wakas ay naiproklama si Tanjay bilang isang component city noong Abril 1, 2001, matapos magsagawa ng plebisito para sa layunin.
Ang lungsod ay bahagi ng 2nd Congressional District ng Negros Oriental at matatagpuan 31 kilometro (19 mi) hilaga ng Dumaguete.[4] Ito ay napapahangganan sa hilaga ng Bais, sa timog ng Munisipyo ng Amlan, sa silangan ng Kipot ng Tañon at sa kanluran ng Munisipyo ng Pamplona . Ang munisipalidad ay tahanan ng dalawang katutubong wika, Minagahat at ang Cebuano na nakalista ng Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino. Ang lungsod ay kilala bilang Lungsod ng mga Propesyonal.

baguhinAng lupain ng Tanjay ay 27,605 ektarya (68,210 akre) at ginagamit para sa agrikultura, tirahan, komersyal, industriyal, pang-edukasyon, kagubatan at iba pang layunin. Ito ang nag-iisang lungsod sa Negros Oriental na may napakalawak na patag na kabundukan, bagama't ang mga bulubundukin at gumugulong na burol ay matatagpuan sa mga hinterland barangay ng Santo Niño at Pal-ew. Matatagpuan din ang mga masungit na lugar sa barangay Bahi-an at Santa Cruz Nuevo.

Ang Tanjay ay may katamtaman at kaaya-ayang klima. Ito ay nailalarawan sa pamamagitan ng medyo tag-ulan mula Mayo hanggang Pebrero at tagtuyot mula Marso hanggang Abril. Ang pag-ulan ay nangyayari sa buong taon na may pinakamalakas na volume sa mga buwan ng Hulyo at Agosto. Ang mga buwan ng Marso at Abril ay ang pinakamainit na buwan at ang pinakamalamig ay Disyembre. Ang Enero ay ang mahalumigmig na buwan habang ang Abril ay ang pinakamababang panahon. Ang mga buwan ng Nobyembre at Disyembre ay may pinakamalakas na bilis ng hangin sa buong taon.
Pamahalaan
baguhinAng huling capitán municipal ng Tanjay sa pagtatapos ng Rehimeng Espanyol ay si Don José Muñoz. Bago ito, siya ay gobernadorcillo. Si Don Agapito Calumpang, na isang cabeza de barangay, ay dating gobernadorcillo din ng Tanjay.
