“Q and A” with Susan Hoehn
Her moment in the spotlight
Susan Hoehn (pronounced hane) is entering her 11th year as exhibitor at Festival of Arts, where she serves on the Artist Advisory Committee and on the Artists Fund board. In a rare moment for a local artist, three of her paintings will be recreated live on stage in the 2025 Pageant of the Masters. The Artist Fund recently caught up with her for a fun "Q and A": Q: How does it feel to have your work in the Pageant? A: It’s a dream come true! As a festival artist, we all imagine what our paintings would look like recreated on stage. I’m thrilled to be part of this unique and historical event. I began painting people viewing art in museums over a decade ago. This subject is very personal to me. At that time, I was caring for my husband, who was diagnosed with a terminal illness. Visiting museums provided comfort during an otherwise dark period. It was an escape to immerse myself in my favorite works of art and observe how other museum-goers did the same. I wanted to recreate that experience, and I have enjoyed visiting museums all over the world ever since.
Selection for Pageant of the Masters
Q: What are your favorite museums?
A: I’ve been fortunate to travel through Europe and parts of the US exploring museums for my paintings. I especially like the museums in California. We are fortunate to live so close to such exceptional museums in southern California. LACMA, the Broad and in Orange County the Laguna Beach Art Museum, the Hilbert and Orange County Museum of Art are a few of my favorites.

Q: Who are a few favorite artists?
A: It’s hard to choose. I like both abstract and representational art and like to include both in my paintings. A few favorites are, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, John Singer Sargent, Richard Diebenkorn, David Hockney and Jackson Pollack.
Q: Favorite things about Festival of Arts?
A: I love the sense of community at the Festival of Arts. The FOA gives artists access to a supportive community that celebrates their work and offers opportunities to advance their careers. This will be my 11th year, and I’ve made so many wonderful friends. Laguna Beach has always been a haven for artists. The Festival of Arts and Pageant of the Masters honor this rich heritage.

Q: Why did you become an artist?
A: I knew from an early age that I wanted to be an artist, and I was nurtured by my parents and teachers. When my children were young, I aimed to have a career that allowed me to balance family time and pursue my passion for art. It took over a decade to build my art career, and it has paid off in so many ways. It challenges me, fulfills my creative desires, and I am compensated by those who appreciate my art. I feel very fortunate to make a living doing something I truly love.
Q: Favorite teacher or institution?
A: Throughout my life, I was fortunate to have teachers who nurtured my talents. In high school, I had an art teacher named Ms. Larkin who created independent study programs for me after I had taken all the available art classes. She was a wonderful mentor. Later, I earned a BA in Art from UC Berkeley, where one of my favorite instructors was Joan Brown, a member of the second-generation Bay Area Figurative Movement. Her teachings were inspiring and continue to influence my work today.

Q: Favorite habits or surroundings to work in?
A: Every morning, I feel fortunate to have a clear vision of what I want to achieve in my work. I start my day with a cup of tea, pull my hair up, and head to my home studio. While painting, I enjoy listening to podcasts and audiobooks, which keep me inspired and engaged.
Q: Can you describe something unexpected?
A: Having my paintings chosen for the Pageant was certainly unexpected. I’ve also experienced serendipitous moments throughout my career. For example, my family was on a boat on Lake Tahoe that broke down, and they were fortunate to have someone tow them to shore. When they exchanged names, they discovered that the rescuer had purchased several of my paintings. I have lots of stories like that—wonderful things that have happened, and interesting people I’ve met because of my art.

Q: What’s your greatest career achievement?
A: I think I am most proud that I am able to support myself as a full-time artist. What started as a passion has evolved into a livelihood. I have galleries that have carried my work for over 25 years, where I sell my limited edition giclées and originals. I am an artist member of the California Art Club and have been honored to participate in their juried shows. This year marks my 11th year at the Festival of Arts, which has opened the door to new collectors and opportunities. I believe in giving back to my artist community and was happy to have the opportunity to teach at Laguna College of Art and Design for several years. I’m also proud to be on the board of The Artists Fund, where we strive to make a difference in the lives of past and present Festival artists.
Q: What would be a dream project?
A: I think to have been recently selected by the Pageant of the Masters, to have my paintings be a part of next years show “Gold Coast: Treasures of California” is a dream come true. As an attendee, I have always marveled at the magic created at the Pageant. To see my work on stage and become part of its history is really unbelievable!
Susan Hoehn will exhibit at Festival of Arts summer 2025, and Pageant tickets are now on sale.

Platters by FOA Exhibitors
Live Demo July 28, 12-3pm
Silent Auction August 25, 6-8pm
Art lovers are invited to a Platter Painting Demonstration Sunday July 28, 12:00-3:00pm in the Art Center at Festival of Arts.Visitors will watch as 12 Festival exhibitors try their hand at painting personal designs on giant platters using ceramic glazes.
Visitors may mingle about the gathering, watch the progress, and interact with the artists as they are working. “Designs are unique to each artist, and often compare to work in their exhibit booth,”said Program Coordinator Mike Tauber. “So a piece by wildlife illustrator Ray Brown will look completely different than one by printmaker Vinita Voogd. It’s fascinating to see the variety!” he said. Additional artists include Bruce Burr, Kate Cohen, Toni Danchik, Sharon Jackman, Yuri Kuznetsov, Pil Ho Lee, Sian Poeschl, Anthony Salvo, Karin Worden, and more.

Success Story: Toni Danchik
Enrichment Grant Awarded
The mission of The Artists Fund is to promote all FOA exhibitors (past and present) and their work, provide career education through our Professional Development seminars and webinars (see story below), and Hardship Grants – helping artists in need. Another priority is encouraging artists to grow their careers through the Enrichment Grant. A recent award went to Toni Danchik, who wrote the following: “Twenty years ago, I took a 12-day painting workshop with Jove Wang. I learned procedures that shaped me as the artist I am today,” she stated.

“Recently I took a 3-day plein air painting workshop with him as a refresher and the first one with him in almost 10-years. My husband immediately noticed that the “chi” had returned – especially noticeable in the strength and quality of my brushwork. Jove mentioned that he felt that I would be an ideal candidate for what he calls his ‘Big Painting’ workshop.
This is for advanced artists by invitation only. It is called ‘Big Painting’ not only because the large format, but you will also learn all the procedures to design and build this large painting. Mine will consist of multiple figures, using several photos and sketches as references. It will involve multiple charcoal sketches to hone my design, several small color sketches to establish my focal point, color harmony and to capture my first feelings and inspiration for the painting.”

“I’ll learn the use of exaggeration in my gestures to create a strong and compelling composition. From there I will be guided through the process of interpreting my concepts into a successful large painting. In this workshop I will be stretched and challenged in my artistry and hopefully I will also receive a few breakthroughs that will take my art to a new level. I am very grateful to The Artists Fund for the grant that will help towards the workshop expenses.”
