POSITIONS WE ARE CURRENTLY HIRING FOR:

Editorial Producer

The Walrus provokes new thinking and sparks conversation on matters vital to Canada. As a registered charity, we publish independent, fact-based journalism across platforms; produce national, ideas-focused events, including our flagship series The Walrus Talks; and train emerging storytellers through our fellowship program. The Walrus is invested in the idea that a healthy society relies on informed citizens.

We are currently accepting applications for an Editorial Producer to work in a full-time role that combines digital-first strategies with fact-based journalism. The ideal candidate will be passionate about the national conversation and the core areas of focus at The Walrus: politics, business, world affairs, society, and culture. This position is open to anyone eligible to work in Canada. Our office is located in downtown Toronto, and remote or hybrid work is an option.

Reporting to the Digital Editor, the Editorial Producer will perform a range of editorial and production tasks, including providing copy editing, building web posts, and contributing to special editorial projects. The successful candidate will also understand and support our educational mandate, including the role fact checking plays in our journalism.

Responsibilities

  • Building and scheduling multiple web posts a day in our content management system (CMS), including contributing display copy and coordinating assets, such as sourcing images
  • Copy-editing all web stories as well as social media and marketing copy and newsletters as needed
  • Contributing research and headline ideas to digital-editorial projects, such as publishing in Apple News

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • 1–2 years of copy-editing experience
  • Experience with WordPress is ideal
  • Strong organizational skills and an ability to meet strict deadlines
  • Ability to complete tasks independently, asking questions as necessary, as well as participating collaboratively in a team environment
  • Familiarity with standard productivity tools (we use Trello and Slack for remote work and collaboration)
  • Familiarity with Canada’s demographics and culture as well as issues of current relevance to Canadians and the media landscape

Compensation and Benefits

The compensation package includes a competitive base salary of $50,000–$55,000, with a full benefits package consisting of medical, dental, vision, prescription, and mental health coverage, an employee and family assistance program, and paid vacation. We also have half-day summer Fridays and a week off over the winter holiday break.

This salary range is part of our equity and pay band work and is commensurate with experience. There are disparities in how candidates negotiate compensation, which contributes to pay gaps. Our salary grid and pay bands offer greater transparency. The salary range is non-negotiable as a result.

The Walrus supports flexible, hybrid work, including a collaborative, open office environment in downtown east Toronto. A laptop will be provided, along with a free subscription to the print or digital edition of The Walrus and a deeply discounted rate for family and friends.
