BONE AWL

The world of raw black metal was not the same with BONE AWL in it, straight up. The approach was so deadly simple and the execution was meticulously careless. I've never been an expert on the genre and its assorted offshoots and subs, but I know what I like and when I hear something that I like...? I keep listening. This is the reissue version that Klaxon dropped when they gave 2007's Almost Dead Man the vinyl treatment a few years ago...and it sounds like my life: Disgusting.

MARI BUNG BANGKIT KEMBALI!

Absolute fucking scorcher from 2002 with 29 Indonesian hardcore bands, many of whom don't appear to pop up anywhere else. Impossible to go through band by band without getting lost in the filthy glory of underground DIY hardcore/punk, but some highlights: DIRTY CHAOS, GARPUTALA, BORGOL, PAPER SKIN, SPUTNIK, COP IS DEAD and BHH - it's hard to find a clunker in the mix. Raw, harsh, low fidelity, intense, honest and powerful hardcore punk? Sold.

DISCLONE

First Question: How can there only be one band named DISCLONE? It's so damn obvious that I think I need to start a second one just to demonstrate the point.
Second Question: How the fuck can hearing "yet another dis-clone band" for the first time hit so damn hard and sound so damn good?

•••••

So there I was sitting in El Buen Sabor with Spencer a few weeks back, poring over the bounty he hauled back from his most recent trip to Europe and marveling at the simple genius of a dis-band called DISCLONE. It was the first tape I popped in when I got home that night, and even with maximum expectations I wasn't prepared. Harsh Raw Affront collects four separate releases with disparate recordings that keep the ears on edge and the heart pounding. DBeat mania distorted to absolute oblivion, which is exactly what I want out of this life: to be distorted to the point of being unrecognizable. Success.

A short tour with SUBHUMANS continues today with a stop in Fresno, California.
Interested parties are encouraged to attend - guest list spots in exchange for cassettes.
I'm the old guy slinging shirts.

APATRIDE

APATRIDE is fukkn perfect. I keep thinking of descriptors and keep coming back to "raw" and "forceful" even though neither really touches the intensity of 2000's Stop Racism Stop Facism. Bali's APATRIDE harness the energy of early Italian and Brasilian hardcore brilliantly - perhaps it's the inherent limits of recording high energy punk with limited resources crashing full speed into punks determined to document their fury, which sums up the foundation of so fucking much great music. Blast "Anti Nazi," "Case The Police" and "Going To Riot" and tell me you aren't ready to fucking smash shit. This tape is absolutely unhinged, and if anyone knows where I can find more APATRIDE please drop me a line...or send me a tape.

MOCK EXECUTION

When MOCK EXECUTION exploded out of Chicago a few years ago it kinda felt like the floor dropped out from underneath me. It wasn't that we'd never heard anything like them, it was just that MOCK EXECUTION did the shit better. The riffs were fire (like, every single riff was fire) and the delivery harnessed a ferocity that defied description. And now....a half decade and several heralded vinyl releases after that first tape split my ears into pieces, Milwaukee's Unlawful Assembly gives them a platform to demonstrate that they still dominate the cassette format.

PARLAG

Some of the nastiest raw black metalpunk I have ever heard comes from Budapest. Paper thin no-fi treble rebels blasting impossibly bleak sonic destruction over the course of six movements....steel yourselves. You're welcome.

NUCLER BLUD

And then there was now...and now there is NUCLER BLUD. Devastatingly calculated in their approach, and rarely have I been more drawn to a band's determination to stay on the rails and remain completely hinged. Saw them for the first time a few weeks back and was not at all disappointed, then came home and had my ass handed to me by the two sub-60 second burners on this gig only cassette. Pay attention, young punks.

CONTORT

A few days ago I woke up and I thought everything was pretty chill. I was dealing with the eternal fallout from some difficult decisions, I was putting one foot in front of the other and everything seemed basically okay. Hesitantly and cautiously okay but....still okay. And then it wasn't. And then I wasn't. It was fucked up. I was fucked up. It was disappointing. I was a disappointment. It was ugly, awful, damaged. I was damaged. I still am, and I don't anticipate a change in that status. This life is a fukkn mess, we humans only make it worse - and these sounds do nothing but reinforce this reality. I'm not sure what you though was going to happen when you woke up today....but it's this.

FEROCIOUS X

The Osaka show in 2006 - Kevin brought us a killer spread and scored Jensen and me copies of the new but already scarce Befreia Från Vånda EP before the show, and then FEROCIOUS X blew the fukkn doors off the joint. On a night where we saw FRAMTID, SPRIAL COLLECTIVE and CROW, it's noteworthy that FEROCIOUS X made the impression that they did. And nine years later I was beyond chuffed when I saw that we were playing with them again...and again they were an absolute steamroller. They translate to the recorded medium effortlessly - pure sonic devastation, exactly when you need. That Osaka show in 2006....that was one of the good ones.

PAYLOAD OF ATOMIC WARHEAD NIGHTMARES

Treble heavy full throttle high end DBeat, from Detroit (get it?!). Riffs are strictly by the book (which I like), and these fools play fast (which I love) and the vocals hit almost like Powerload-era demos. Ultra raw medium fidelity anti-fashion unforgiving fist banging kång through a Midwest dirt punk filter. I literally do not know what else I could ask for this morning.

NERVESKADE

Do you remember when this happened? The noisy, chaotic shit was already a thing and other bands had started pushing the envelope to be sure but NERVESKADE was different. And after NERVESKADE...? Everything was different.

VIDEO DISEASE

A deep dive into virtually any era or region will yield results, see my recent combings of the '10s as an example. And then hit rewind and start digging through the late '00s and see what a few extra years can bring. VIDEO DISEASE dropped this demo in 2008 and then quit after two killer singles the following year - four raw and rough around the edges hardcore punk slammers from folks who would go on to bring us STOIC VIOLENCE, RESPONSE, MONGREL and a host of other hitters during the course of the next decade. This is dirty jeans and leather jacket/s hardcore.

SKALV

There's no place like California's Central Valley, and it get gets even more interesting as you travel south towards Los Angeles. Bakersfield is the last bastion of sun baked agricultural freakzone - close enough to the "cool" megalopolis and all of its culture and self assigned relevance to feel within reach....but one hundred miles is a motherfucker, and walking those streets feels more like Madera or Stockton than Hollywood (or San Pedro). What does that mean? Fuck, I'm just a middle aged transplant from Oklahoma rambling on the night before god's birthday over here, but it seems to me that the punk from places that are a little *off* often sounds a lot more *on* if you know what I mean. We're talking about the place that brought Munoz Gym to the punk world. Jerry's Pizza was an institution when I got maced there on New Year's Eve 1998 and is still hosting gigs in its shitty ass basement. Bakersfield is just different, and the punk that comes from there sounds a little rougher around the edges. Enter: SKALV. Fidelity be damned, this five song metallic crust attack from 2015 lands just fukkn right - raw, intense, honest...fukkn brutal. SKALV sounds like sun baked punk working class from a place that's just out of reach.

PIG DNA

And here you go - years (literally...eight years) since the last timer PIG DNA graced the digital pages of this virtual publication, here are PIG DNA destroying your throat once again. Maybe this is two songs and maybe it's less than six minutes. But this tape is a reminder that there was a time when music didn't matter - a time when punk was more important than sound and when 'noise not music' really meant "noise is music' ands we all fell for it. The cycles are real, and I can't wait for the kids to get back on this train....

DEGOLLADA

The most gloriously snotty raw punk I've come across in ages; ramshackle lo-fi hardcore manifested in a basement in Argentina. Five songs here...and all you're going to want is five more. You can't have them, so you'll listen again.

KOMATIITE

For the traditional working person, today marks the beginning of a new week. Another week. The first day of another slog. A new beginning with a very very predictable end. It' doesn't have to be like this...but it's going to be like this. So - ears open, punk. Volume up, punk. KOMATIITE. Move to Maine, play raw hardcore, listen to "Final Breaths" and give up. There's always another way.

SHITDOGS OF WAR

I've been on the hunt for the second tape from Baltimore's SHITDOGS OF WAR ever since the abomination known as Songs Of Shit And Hate graced my earholes nearly twenty years ago. But if you are patient, and if you are open...then you might find it where you were never looking. There aren't many like this, and SHITDOGS OF WAR shine even among the few. Raw, messy, murky, irreverent, fierce....the sound of shit. In your ears. It's the way they did it that made (and still makes) them so special; I guess not giving an actual fuck makes all the difference.

SIMFUCKERS

This shit is just fukkn naaaaaasty. Wild and chaotic new century noise punk from the mean streets of Adelaide. I'm not sure what you were expecting, but this SIMFUCKERS outfit is (was?) an absolute disgrace. In other words: You need these sounds in your ear holes.

DISHUMAN

Five blasts of by-the-books DBeat repetition, delivered with every ounce of raw fury the (sub)genre demands. Bands can use more than two riffs if they want...but DISHUMAN makes it clear that the extra riffs aren't really necessary. "Hate For This System" on repeat all damn day.

GAZ

Absolute ramshackle scorcher coming at you from the late teens and kicking your fukkn ass. These kids are (were) complete savages...the guitars are from another planet - same guitarist as IN SCHOOL but the riffs and riffing are more unhinged and more honed, which makes no sense, but it's part of what makes this thing such a monster. Listen to Golnar yell "How Do We Remember...?" and know that GAZ is not ahead of you...they're just playing an entirely different game.
