EU leaders shun Trump, keep making mistakes — Hungarian politician

Mate Kocsis emphasized that EU leaders "should prioritize peace instead of war; engagement with the US instead of conflicts; competitive advantages instead of defense spending"

BUDAPEST, March 3. /TASS/. EU leaders deliberately avoid contacts with US President Donald Trump, but "continue making one error after another," said Mate Kocsis, the current leader of the ruling Fidesz faction in the Hungarian parliament.

"Many European leaders prefer conflict, and express highly liberal views. For them, cooperation with a conservative president is like being friends with the devil. At the same time, Trump has accelerated progress. Europe has found itself in a situation that is far from ideal, but its leaders keep repeating mistakes," he told the Magyar Nemzet newspaper in an interview.

Kocsis emphasized that EU leaders "should prioritize peace instead of war; engagement with the US instead of conflicts; competitive advantages instead of defense spending." "But they don’t," he added.

In his words," the Hungarian government has chosen a different path, and is being punished by Brussels for that."

"But the time for change has arrived, and we can become the link between the United States and the European Union. This may put Hungary in a very advantageous position," the politician added.

He went on to say that the previous US administration, led by Joe Biden, was aligned with EU leaders as they were offering broad military support to the Kiev government together. But the situation shifted when Trump took office. Times have changed, but Brussels persistently follows its course without taking Trump’s position into account, Kocsis added.

When asked whether the European Union will have to reconsider its approach and adapt to the changes, Kocsis replied that he saw no intention to do so at this point. As an example, he cited broader military support to Ukraine, offered by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas in the wake of Vladimir Zelensky’s failed talks with Trump.
