KongMing on Turn 3: Dude, Where's My Deck?

Here's the results of a Playtest I just did.

High Tide, Sphere of the Suns, Ponder, 2 Frantic Search, 2 Island

Took the play

Turn 1: Island, Cast Ponder into Frantic Search, High Tide, and Lonely Sandbar. Draw the Frantic Search, topdeck High Tide, pass

Turn 2: Draw High Tide, play Island, cast Sphere of the Suns, pass

Turn 3: Play Lonely Sandbar, enters tapped. Tap Sphere to cast High Tide. Tap an Island leaving U floating to cast the other High Tide. Tap Island and leave U floating to cast Frantic Search into 2 Breakthroughs, discard a Frantic Search and a Breakthrough. Untap 2 Islands and Lonely Sandbar.

Tap Island and Lonely Sandbar for UUUU, cast Breakthrough with X of 4. Draw Fraying Sanity, Island, Anticipate, and Ponder, discard Island. Tap Island for UUU and cast Frantic Search into Anticipate and Opt, Discard Opt and an Anticipate. Untap 2 Islands and Lonely Sandbar.

Tap Island for UUU and cast Ponder, seeing Frantic Search, Island and Island. Draw the Frantic Search. Tap Lonely Sandbar and Island for UUUU, leaving UUUU floating and casting Frantic Search into 2 Islands, discard the Islands, untap 2 Islands and Lonely Sandbar.

Spend UU on Anticipate into Island, Island, and High Tide. Put High Tide in my Hand, bottomdeck the Islands. Spend U on High Tide. Spend U on Opt into an Island, bottomdeck it and draw an Island...

Tap Island for UUUU and leave UU floating to cast Anticipate into Island, Island, and Breakthrough, put Breakthrough in hand and bottomdeck the Islands. Tap Island for UUUU and cast Breakthrough with X of 4, draw High Tide, Cloud of Faeries, Fraying Sanity, and Careful Study, discard Fraying Sanity and Careful Study.

Tap Lonely Sandbar for U and cast High Tide. Cast Cloud of Faeries for UU, untap both Islands. Tap Island for UUUUU and cast Anticipate into Sphere of the Suns, Sol Ring, and Opt. Take Opt, bottomdeck the other two. Cast Opt, bottomdecking an Island and drawing Traumatize!!!

I am one mana short of being able to cast them both... And they are the only cards in my hand. Big sad. I will have to play Fraying Sanity on them for now, and then hit them with Traumatize next turn, praying draw mana and they don't have counterspells?

Turn 4: Draw Sol Ring. Theoretically cast it and then Traumatize my opponent and win the game once the Fraying Sanity trigger resolves.

Overall thoughts: If I had an Island instead of a Lonely Sandbar as my 3rd land for turn, I would have had the mana to finish the game up on Turn 3.

This kind of makes me think about an alternate, Surveil version of the deck, with the same High Tide engine, but more Surveil cards that thin your deck of unnecessary cards in case you shuffle with a Ponder later. I'd maybe swap the Opts, Anticipates, Breakthroughs, and for some combination of Consider, Curate, Mission Briefing, and Enhanced Surveillance. Mission Briefing is really powerful because it lets you recast your Frantic Searches. I'd also swap the Sandbars and a couple mana rocks for Islands.

Additionally, if we're thinking Surveil, and we want to bounce our Cloud of Faeries, how about Unauthorized Exit and Unexplained Disappearance?

That’s still how I feel about sheoldred. My personal favorite pioneer deck, Esper greasefang, has a very large amount of draw spells and cantrips i.e. Faithful Mending, Consider, And Tainted Indulgence. My only removal is Fatal Push which I rarely ever get revolt active on. With all the Rakdos midrange decks running around all playing a full play set of sheoldred,I feel like it could be banned, but maybe that’s just me.

wallisface on Brew ideas for Scrawling Crawler

Nice stuff!! My own tinkering has been awkward - I keep wanting to force Birthing Ritual into the deck but it’s just a lot of effort for minimal payoff. My current brew looks very similar to existing Dimir-Frog lists (an accident I swear!), but with an Echo of Eonsfoil package and enough supporting self-discard to abuse it.

20x Lands

4x Scrawling Crawler

4x Psychic Frog

4x Orcish Bowmasters

3x Abhorrent Oculus

4x Echo of Eonsfoil

4x Counterspell

4x Fatal Push

3x Collective Brutality

3x Unearth

4x Preordain

4x Tainted Indulgence

I guess do some playtesting and see how things go.

I’d heavily suggest against using ”pet cards” though, as this archetype is already trying to pursue a gameplan that is far-from optimal, and so it needs all the help it can get. Including Corrupted Resolve just because you-can, seems like you’re kneecapping your brew before its even had a chance to compete.

Inexorable Tide is in-of itself a bad card, and even running one copy feels dubious. I’d only considered one-copy “ok” because there will be some grindy top-decky situations where it can help. But even then, there will be a lot of games where drawing this, or playing it, cost you the game. Running two copies feels very dangerous.

Running better draw effects, like Opt, Consider, Preordain, Memory Deluge, will draw you naturally into more poison effects. You don’t need Infectious Inquiry to be doing that also. Especially when its life-loss worsens your matchup versus anything remotely-aggro, and its sorcery-speed makes it almost-impossible to control the boardstate.

But, i’d suggest playing some matchups with this deck and seeing how this performs in reality. I’m super-confident my points will hold-up, but its best to test and see.

I will replace all Opt with Consider as you have a better chance to play the card from graveyard than from the bottom of library. What do you think of replacing 2 Damnation for 2 Toxic Deluge?

Yeah Azcanta is a good card (which i like tho) but it's slow. Expressive Iteration is op, on turn 3 you can exile a land card and playing it, resulting in a total of two cards drawn. Cut 2 Azcant for 2 Expressive and 2 Opt aswell. Also replace the other two Opt for Consider, which allow your Snapcaster to work better!

Hi. Since you have 3x Murktide Regent maybe could be more useful to play Consider instead of Preordain. To get some more utility you can try +1 Archmage's Charm and -1 The One Ring in main and 1 The One Ring can go to sideboard.

In sideboard can be useful to have some anti grave spells like Surgical Extraction or Nihil Spellbomb. Some more Consign to Memory will be good.

  1. If you plan to play Rune Snag, then it's better to play Consider rather than Opt. It's actually relevant that you can put cards into the graveyard.
  2. Into the Roil is obsolete. Replace it with basically anything else.
  3. In pauper, Faeries with enters-the-battlefield effects are usually combined with few ninjas. Maybe add two Ninja of the Deep Hours
