Steele Creek

A formerly rural township in southwestern Mecklenburg County, NC. Now a little over half of the area and about 85% of the population is within the Charlotte City limits. Steele Creek generally includes that part of southwest Mecklenburg County that is south of the airport and west of Sugar Creek and I-77.

The Steele Creek Community dates back to the 1740's and had been one of the fastest growing residential areas of Mecklenburg County before the economic downturn. The population increased 106% from 2000 (25,282) to 2010 (54,014) according to US census counts. It also contains the highest concentration of industrial employment in North Carolina and is home to several recreation sites. The character of Steele Creek has continued to change due to rapid residential, commercial, and other growth in the area.

Major commercial centers include Whitehall, Ayrsley, and RiverGate.
