Staten Island (/ˌstætən ˈaɪlənd/) is a borough of New York City, New York, United States, located in the southwest part of the city. Staten Island is separated from New Jersey by the Arthur Kill and the Kill Van Kull, and from the rest of New York by Upper New York Bay and the Narrows.

With a population of 468,730, Staten Island is the least populated of the five boroughs but is the third largest in area at 59 sq mi (153 km2). Until 1975, the borough was officially named the Borough of Richmond. Staten Island has been sometimes called "the forgotten borough" by inhabitants who feel neglected by the city government.

  • At least two TV shows in my lifetime, "Car 54 Where Are You?" and "Law & Order" have made references about Staten Island being the borough where police officers/detectives are "exiled" to when they fall out of favor in other boroughs. I have no idea if that is a reality or not. But, I find it comical that two TV series, a generation apart, have referenced Staten Island along same lines. [chuckle]
  • Shaolin Island!
  • The attached polygon includes also the navigable and controlled waters lying adjacent to the land and comprising those waters over which 'New York City' exercises a legal riparian & littoral jurisdiction.
