Dieselgate – The Story So Far
The Dieselgate scandal first hit headlines in 2015 when Volkswagen were accused of tampering with their diesel engine by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). They claimed that the German manufacturer was in violation of the US Clean Air Act.
The EPA found that Volkswagen had programmed many of their diesel vehicles to activate emission control sequeneces when they were being tested. When the vehicles were on the road in real-world conditions, they emitted up to 40 times more nitrogren oxide, a dangerous polluntant that causes thousands of premature deaths across the globel every year.
In May 2022, Volkswagen settled a UK group litigation order, paying 91,000 claimants £193m, around £2,100 each.
Now, many other manfufacturers are in the firing line, with Mercedes the next in line to garner lots of attention from claimants in the past 6 months. It is claimed that they too have fitted illegal defeat devices in their diesel vehicles, and UK residents want to be compensate for this potential emissions lie.
What To Do If You’ve Been Affected
Thousands of UK residents are joining the diesel emissions scandal claim. Now the Volkswagen claim has ended and thousands received an average of £2,100, people are becoming more aware of the benefits of holding huge manufacturers accountable for their lies on emissions.
While many more manufacturers are being investigated, the Mercedes-Benz case appears to be much more developed, with legal teams welcoming Mercedes customers to join their claim. If you bought, financed or leased a diesel Mercedes-Benz between 2008 and 2018 you could be eligible to claim thousands.
The nature of these case means that you cannot bring a claim against Mercedes yourself. Instead, you will need to use the services of expert diesel Mercedes Solicitors who can bring forward the claim for you.
