The Impact of Financial Stress on Your Health

Stop over spending, your health will thank you.
Chronic financial stress is one of the biggest forms of stress that leads to health problems down the road. And it’s generally self-inflicted stress just so someone can pretend like they make more money than they do.
Why drive a car or buy a house that’s more than you can afford when it makes you be on a very tight and stressful budget for the rest of your life? Is this lifetime of stress really worth it?
No, it’s really not.
1. Sell your house and buy a smaller cheaper one well within your budget
2. Sell your car and buy a cheaper used one
3. Stop shopping daily on Amazon for things you don’t really need

Favorite natural cosmetic & skincare products

My wife Jen is often asked what her favorite cosmetic and skincare products are, we try to use as many natural products in our house as we can -- here is what she has found over the years that she likes the best.

We research everything on EWG's Skin Deep website or Think Dirty which has a lot of great info.

Ambre blends natural perfume  | Burt's Bees lotion for daytime |  Soapwall restorative face serum for nighttime (one bottle typically lasts 6 - 8 months)  |  Beautycounter rejuvenating radiance serum for nighttime  |  P.T. Pure lash & brow oil -- made in Michigan!

Pumpkin Pancake Recipe

'Tis the season for pumpkin everything! Pumpkin is great to eat this time of year, as it contains a lot of potassium which can help lower blood pressure and help reduce the risk of a stroke.

This recipe is a family favorite of ours and it is gluten-free. It makes 8 small pancakes. Serve with local maple syrup!

5 Tips to Naturally Boost Your Child's Immune System

As the days get shorter and there is less sunshine, our immune systems typically can take a hit causing a "cold and flu season."

Especially if you have kids in school, follow these tips to keep their immune systems strong.

1. Wash hands regularly -- when you get home from an outing, before eating and after sneezing or coughing. Do not use an anti-bacterial soap. We like Dr. Bronner's, Honest Company or Method brand soaps. If you are on the go, find a safe hand sanitizer such as Honest Company's hand sanitizer (also available in a convenient spray, available at Kehres Health & Chiropractic, Target or Honest.com).

2. Use Xlear nose spray -- Dr. Elisa Song, MD says "one of the MOST preventive things you can do is to irrigate your and your children’s nasal passages with Xlear nasal spray at the end of every day, and after any potential exposure (work, school, playgroups, plane travel, etc.). This is a saline nasal spray with xylitol and grapefruit seed extract, both of which have antimicrobial properties. After exposure to a virus, the virus tries to invade and multiply in your nasal passages for at least 1-2 days before you develop any symptoms. Nasal irrigation can wash away viral particles before they have the opportunity to take hold, and thereby prevent many infections from happening in the first place!"

3. Take Vitamin D3 supplements -- as we get less sunshine in the fall and winter, it can deplete our immune system. There are many great kids' Vitamin D3 supplements on the market. Make sure they are GMP Certified (Good Manufacturing Process). Read more about the benefits of Vitamin D3 here.

4. Get plenty of sleep -- Sleep is when your body heals. Lack of sleep can cause inflammation, which can cause disease and illness. Do everything you can to reduce light in the bedroom (no tablets or tvs, use blackout curtains).

5. Decrease sugar, increase fruits and vegetables -- holidays, birthday parties, school snacks and more can sneak in more sugar to your child's diet than you would like. It's ok to have treats once in a while, but be sure they eat healthy food before these events and keep only healthy food at home. Kids do not need juice, stop buying it and it is an easy way to reduce sugar in their diets (while saving you money at the grocery store). Veggie shakes are a great way for our kids to get extra fruits and vegetables.

Almond Flour Crepes Recipe

Eating healthy doesn't mean eating food that doesn't taste good. Most people should be eating 100 grams or less of net carbs per day. (Total carbs - Fiber = Net Carbs)

Replacing flour with almond flour is a simple way to reduce net carbs and still make delicious breakfasts.

Recipe:
4 eggs
½ cup almond flour*
¼ cup water
1 teaspoon cinnamon

Mix all ingredients together, heat pan on medium with coconut oil. Add crepe mixture and cook for one minute on each side or until brown.

Remove crepe from pan, load it up with blueberries and roll it up, add a few blueberries and sprinkle cinnamon on top!

You can also drizzle local raw honey on top.

Fruits and Vegetables

As you are filling your grocery cart with fruits and vegetables it is important to know how to store produce correctly so it lasts as long as possible, especially if you buy organic.
Avocados can be ripened quickly if put in a brown paper bag with a banana. Whereas if you want to slow the ripening process, put avocados in the fridge.
To store bananas long term, peel, slice and store in the freezer in a plastic bag. They will keep for awhile in the freezer and they work great for smoothies.

Healthy home tip: switch to wool dryer balls

Want to easily improve your health while saving money? Switch from dryer sheets to wool dryer balls.

Dryer sheets can contain chemicals such as chloroform (carcinogenic), benzyl alcohol (can cause central nervous system disorders) and ethyl acetate (irritating to the eyes and respiratory tract). Especially if you have children, the safest option is to stop using dryer sheets.

Wool dryer balls are available at local retailers such as Sweet Peach Baby Boutique, Bed, Bath & Beyond or online at Amazon.com or Etsy stores such as: https://www.etsy.com/shop/TheMittenMom

Off gassing: What is it and why should you care?

Everyone loves new stuff, carpet, furniture, flooring, paint, cars!

Unfortunately, while making many new products chemicals are used and they stay in the product, especially the gases. For example when carpet is installed it can off gas chemicals for months after installation. (Think new carpet smell or new car smell) This might not seem like a big thing but long term it can cause many health problems. From allergies to headaches to digestive problems.

The biggest problem is with small children and dogs. When people are getting ready to have a baby they typically want to get new carpet and furniture. When the baby is born, where do they lay it? Right on the floor where the off gassing is the worst! As adults you might not notice the carpet smell, but if you get down on the ground it becomes a lot stronger.

When buying new stuff there are a few things you can do to help reduce this problem. Try to buy organic material that is made without using chemicals, have carpet installed or furniture brought before you are traveling somewhere so that it has a week to air out on it's own or even have your carpets cleaned with an organic detergent to help remove some of the chemicals.

Switch to glass containers for your health

Lifefactory glass bottles, available at Kehres Health
Research is becoming more conclusive that all plastic containers (including BPA-free) leech estrogen like compounds into the contents of the containers even if they aren't heated.

Increased levels of this compound has been linked to everything from cancer to diabetes and ADHD.

Switching to glass is easy! Glass lasts longer and stays cleaner than plastic. Consider making the switch!

Glass Lifefactory bottles are available in a variety of sizes and colors at our Saginaw chiropractic office and Midland chiropractic office. Visit www.KehresHealth.com or contact us at 989-607-4322 for more information.

Healthy Home: Honest Co. Organic Healing Balm

Using healthy and safe products in our home has always been a priority for us, especially now that we have a daughter.

Children, especially newborns, are more vulnerable to toxins and chemicals than adults are. Their immune systems and nervous systems are still developing, meaning they are not very good at processing and eliminating toxins yet. By decreasing a child's exposure to chemicals, it can help protect them from illness and allergies.

Unfortunately, many skin care products such as diaper cream contains parabens, fragrance (a variety of chemicals can hide under this broad label, and babies smell good enough, they don't need fragrance!) and phthalates.

When looking at bath and body products, I visit the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep database for more information.

The Honest Company carries a lot of great, all-natural products that have very good, low ratings. We've been using the healing balm on Delaney if she has a bit of diaper rash or when her skin was really dry when she was a newborn. It can also be used on adults for dry skin or ezcema.

The Honest Company products are available at Kehres Health & Chiropractic in our Saginaw chiropractic office and Midland chiropractic office. Contact us at 989-607-4322 or visit our website www.kehreshealth.com.

Kehres Health & Chiropractic now carries The Honest Company

Kehres Health & Chiropractic is excited to announce that we now carry The Honest Company products! I have always been hesitant to carry lotions, shampoos and other products like this because of their EWG (Environmental Working Group) ratings. Many products that claim to be healthy and non-toxic don't always have the best rating and aren't as healthy as they claim.

The Honest Company products have excellent ratings! Right now we carry baby wipes, lotion, diaper balm, shampoo and body wash, hand sanitizer and chapstick.

Also, The Honest Company was created by Jessica Alba!

These products are available at our Midland chiropractic office (601 E. Wackerly Road, #2, Midland, MI) and our Saginaw chiropractic office (4882 Gratiot Road, #13, Saginaw, MI).

Natural Spring Cleaning Tips [NBC 25]

Saginaw chiropractor, Dr. Dan Kehres, as seen on NBC 25

True health is total health. One aspect of total health is reducing the toxins in your environment.

A recent study by the EPA stated that the toxic chemicals in household cleaners are three times more likely to cause cancer than outdoor air.

One of the best all-natural cleaners is white vinegar as it is non-toxic and inexpensive. It can be used to clean almost anything!

For general cleaner mix half water, half white vinegar and a few drops off essential if you want a scented cleaner.

To mop your floors, we use the same mixture. It is safe for kids and pets too!

Another simple way to create a healthier home is to remove two common sources of chemicals from your laundry room -- fabric softener and dryer sheets.

Here are some of the chemicals found in commercial fabric softeners and dryer sheets you want to avoid:

  •  Alpha Terpineol: can cause central nervous damage and respiratory problems
  • Benzyl Acetate: linked to pancreatic cancer
  • Camphor: causes central nervous disorders, is easily absorbed through skin
  • Chloroform: a carcinogenic neurotoxin that warns inhalation can be fatal
To reduce toxins in your laundry, replace dryer sheets with dryer balls. Plastic dryer balls can be found at many home good stores, but wool dryer balls are your best option. They help reduce drying time (saving money) and help soften clothes too. To find wool dryer balls locally, visit Sweet Peach Baby Boutique in Bay City, Mich.

Also, try swapping out fabric softener for white vinegar. Fill a Downy Ball with white vinegar and throw in the wash on top of the laundry. It works great, is a natural antibacterial cleaner and fabric softener. And it doesn't leave your laundry smelling like vinegar.
