S4C is celebrating its 30th birthday on 1 November 2012.
As well as the political struggle behind its launch, there was plenty of work to do behind the cameras to get the Welsh language channel on air in 1982.
BBC Wales arts and media correspondent Huw Thomas looks back at S4C's early years.
