Thassa's Oracle

Creature — Merfolk Wizard

When this enters, look at the top X cards of your library, where X is your devotion to blue. Put up to one of them on top of your library and the rest on the bottom of your library in a random order. If X is greater than or equal to the number of cards in your library, you win the game. (Each in the mana costs of permanents you control counts toward your devotion to blue.)

Felipix,

I can see that you are starting a Primer, in case you don't have them I suggest the following resource: Epochalyptik's Do you want to write a primer? I've found it useful and hope you do as well. So, first things first I have some questions:

  1. What decks do you intend to play with using this deck? Do you want to play in a High Powered pod with degenerate spells like Mana Drain, Force of Will, Winter Orb and the like? Or is this a pod with lower power?

  2. What's the budget with this deck? Is it to be in the same mold as an upgraded precon?

  3. How do you want to win?

I saw your comments on the Advertise your deck forum, and I can see that you wish to add more draw and more control. In regards to draw I can see that Rhystic Study was suggested before and you have budgetary concerns - there is always the option to proxy. If your playgroup allows it of course.

Possible subthemes/Wincons to consider outside of Voltron: - A flicker (exile a permanent then return it to the battlefield end of turn) subtheme may be an interesting direction to go with this deck. There are numerous options to go with in blue and including creatures such as Thassa, Deep-Dwelling, Scourge of Fleets, Archaeomancer, Spark Double, and Spellseeker to use and abuse their enter the battlefield effects.

Honorable Mentions for fun Control/Card Advantage effects:

  • Aven Courier - this guy helps your commander do more of what it likes to do. You should try and slot him in.
  • Stormtide Leviathan - this guy can stop combat damage from reaching you for a time
  • Faerie Mastermind - fun little taxing effects like this are great because it guarantees card advantage
  • Wavebreak Hippocamp - given your deck has a lot of interaction it's likely you could keep up your tempo with this guy out

JeskaiMaster01,

What are your most important turns? (e.g. when you can reliably threaten to kill an opponent?). A good model I like to reference is Epochalyptik's Do you want to write a primer?. This is just a basic shell but it does get you thinking about all the big questions.

I'm going to be honest here - I know of Food Chain, but I have no idea what the usual chain lines are. I don't use it and I don't have anyone in my playgroup who does. I think I know Thassa's Oracle and to some degree Demonic Consultation - that's just simply lab manning out. But again, not every visitor is going to get that. I can assume that this isn't a Commander deck - but a cEDH deck which I regard as a whole different format. You should absolutely state that in your deck description as well as I'd assume you wouldn't break this thing out at a pod full of upgraded precons.

Djh3max on cEDH upgrade ideas for First …

Hi all,

I have been working for a while on my first cEDH deck and I am getting to a point where I know there is room for improvement but I am not sure where. I am working on a semi budget so I have made certain choices so far to reflect that. Here is the deck list:

https://moxfield.com/decks/K8ynmFMH8UiyiHjr5GCfUw

The deck aims to win with the food chain cast from exile combo for infinite mana to infinitely cascade through the deck with The First Sliver and casting Lavabelly Sliver to ping the opponents to death with the infinite etb triggers from the commander. The secondary win con is through cards like Demonic Consultation or Tainted Pact to exile the deck and win with either Laboratory Maniac, Jace, Wielder of Mysteries, or Thassa's Oracle. The rest of the deck consists of tutors to find my combo pieces, recursion spells in case I lose a piece, and counter spells. I also found that Transmute mechanic worked for extra tutors as well.

I know the land base needs a ton of work but i found that the filter/pain/fast lands were excellent budget friendly options. As far as the main deck goes, I am thinking that the first card to go should be Rhystic Study since it feels too slow for the pay off. I can consistently win on turn 5 with this list but I want to get that down to a consistent turn 4 win.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated thank you!!

DemonDragonJ, again the reason is context. You do not get all of that for a mere 2 mana. Let's dissect each of those upsides.

  • You have no maximum hand size - Genuinely good, no complaints here. However, this by itself a good card doesn't make. Graceful Adept is a card that's not even close to being a staple even though it has the same effect. This is because nobody puts a card in their deck exclusively because it just gives them no maximum hand size (Reliquary Tower is a very different case). This effect is more relevant when attached to something else. Examples being Proft's Eidetic Memory, Sea Gate Restoration  Flip, The Magic Mirror and, most notably Thought Vessel. Notice something? None are creatures and provide more immediate and impactful effects.

  • At the beginning of your upkeep, if you have exactly thirteen cards in your hand, you win the game. - This is honestly because Innistrad haha 13 funny. It's an extremely clunky alternative win condition. Just because something has you win the game written on it doesn't mean it's good. Example (focusing on cards that can go on any deck) being Luck Bobblehead. Alternative win conditios are always attached to something, which is why Coalition Victory is banned since that alternative wincon is actually pretty easy to achieve. Thassa's Oracle is also another very good example. It's really easy to mill your entire deck, which literally makes Thoracle a you win button.

  • : Draw a card - Although good, let's think a little bit about costs. Triskaidekaphile costs to cast and to activate, meaning you have to pay a total of for 1 single card, for two cards and so on. Hey, guess how much mana are 7 cards worth. The answer is Overflowing Insight (7 cards for 7 mana) meaning the rate mana-to-card isn't that good. You might argue that paying that much mana in a single go is too much, and that would be correct. Still, for a measly , Wizard Class gives you no maximum hand size, draws two cards, is more resilient to removal and the +1/+1 counters can actually be a decent win condition.

Long story short, the cost deceptive. There's way more involved than just paying two mana. However, I'll admit that Triskaidekaphile isn't necessarily bad. I just think it's bait. There are so many cards that either look incredible by themselves or look like they should be amazing in certain decks, but when you actually play with them they're just ok.

There's a lot more that could be said, but the main thing is a lot of cards need context to be properly evaluated. Siege Rhino was a absurd monster when it first released. Years later, now it's just ok.

lukecwolf, I very dearly would like to see Drannith Magistrate banned in EDH, and possibly Thassa's Oracle, as well, but what is wrong with Rograkh? Is he too powerful for 0 mana?

I do not believe WOTC had any say in handover. Even if they did, the new judge committee maintains much of the same the same hands off, keep playing casual, and be social component of the old committee. And unless they're directly on the drawing board, I don't think it will change much.

Put a different way, WOTC has no intention of ever having commander ever be truly competitive, as that would alienate a significant portion of their card design and base. The same staples see so much competitive play that making commander competitive would mean they would need to reprint those or artificially power creep the format like it did with Modern Horizons.

I'm cautious with predictions. Mystery Booster 2 reprinted so many commander cards. Perhaps they could hit egregious cards in cEDH. Thassa's Oracle and Demonic Consultation. But those were just reprinted. Unfortunate timing with the committee adjustment. Drannith Magistrate,Rograkh, The One Ring, and Rhystic Study have been much complained of cards. Ikoria power crept the game, and it could happen again.

It's in all a very unfortunate accident due in large part to having such a large base of players. But I don't foresee the committee changing the game or the format much.

Oh, you just changed it. However, three of the four wincons still contain Thassa's Oraclefoil

And I quote, "Combos & Wincons: Thassa's Oraclefoil Demonic Consultation + Thassa's Oracle Enter the Infinite + Thassa's Oracle ." There are no other wincons you listed. I'm just going off what you said.
