Path to Exile

Instant

Exile target creature. Its controller may search their library for a basic land card, put that card onto the battlefield tapped, then shuffle their library.

Big thanks for the +1 and thoughtful suggestions. I do feel like I need to remind you that Blasphemous Act is stymied by Brave the Elements. And on top of that, this deck often wins with only 3-4 creatures in play.

It's been quite a while that I updated this deck at all until just recently. I'm sure there are other spells that I should be swapping in. The last time I was really putting any work into this deck, The Ozolith was under $10 lol, and Path to Exile was over $5. And Aether Vial was like $25.

I like Adeline, Resplendent Cathar - I actually built a deck around her specifically. (see Sweet Adeline) I suppose I could put in place of Mangara of Corondor, which is rather slow anyway.

I'll def do some work on this and see if I can bring it up to the year 2025 :)

Removal like Path to Exile, Winds of Abandon and Settle the Wreckage give your opponents lands, so you have something to catch up to.

kamarupa on pigs do fly

I love this concept of flying pigs. Absolute riot. But I want to encourage to try to make it as viable as possible.

For starters, I'd like to see Brindle Shoat get cut, because it's the only non-modern legal spell. Might as well go for legal since you're so close.

I'd also like to see non-boars get cut. There are enough boars and ways to make them fly. Perhaps the most obvious boar that's missing being Ilharg, the Raze-Boar. I realize red is an extra color, but most boars are within the gruul color set, so adding red opens a lot of doors. More importantly, Ilharg helps you get a lot of the high MV creatures into play, which seems pretty helpful.

Cliffhaven Kitesail seems like a good fit, being lower MV to cast, and more durable than an Enchantment.

I've never been much of a fan of Explore because if it's not in your opening hand, it's too common not to get to play an extra card, and 2MV is too much for a cantrip. 20 lands is def on the low side, too, especially with an average MV of 3.48, which is quite high. I suggest you go with Fertile Ground instead, which will ramp much more consistently and also mana fix. Alternatively, you could go with a slower ramp, but still get the cantrip (albeit at a high MV) with Weirding Wood. I also think you need to add 3 lands.

With how many high MV spells here, I think Fog would be useful.

I'd cut the way too high MV Emeria's Call for Heroic Intervention or Tamiyo's Safekeeping or Vines of Vastwood or Tyvar's Stand, etc.

I'd like to see 4xPath to Exile and also 2-3xHarmonize. It's going to be difficult to get everything to fit into only 60 cards, but I find it's generally really helpful to have at least 4x removal and at last 2x draw card.

kamarupa on Return from Exile

I like the concept, but I think this concept could be honed a bit more... A few spells to consider:

Hour of Revelation/Devastating Mastery/Planar Cleansing/Perilous Vault - these works on everything, not just creatures. So they're a good bit broader and effective against more decks. And they also opens to the door to use spells like Journey to Nowhere or Chained to the Rocks.

Since you plan on using wraths to wipe the board, spells like Path to Exile don't seem quite a useful as normal. Perhaps protection spells like Brave the Elements might be more useful - instead of removing early threats, you could block without your creatures dying. And later in the game, you can use it to evade any blockers an opponent might muster after your wrath.

I'm a little concerned there aren't many creatures in this deck and many of them have rather high MV. I wonder if something like Holy Day might also be more useful than Path to Exile in keeping you in the game long enough for your plan to work.

AlistarFiend, you are very welcome, and I am very glad that you appreciated my suggestion!

Would you consider either Butcher of Malakir or Markov Purifier for this deck? I also would recommend Swords to Plowshares instead of Path to Exile, unless you do not wish for your opponents to gain life, when playing this deck.

Ok, one last thing and sorry for triple posting:

How many times do new players forget to fetch a land when something like Path to Exile hits their creature?

No one gets to pressure them to make a choice. They simply ignored it/forgot about it and the game is 100% cool with that - no amount of judge calls will revert the game state once you "forgot".

Imho, this is a good example of how the spirit of the game wants to handle MAY abilities. You can literally do nothing / ignore it completely / forget about it and the game moves on without a problem.

Ink-Spewer Dragon

Creature - Dragon

Flash

Flying, vigilance

When you cast Ink-Spewer Dragon, you may change some of the text of target spell you don't control. You may change any of the following:

  • The player or players
  • The spell type and / or subtype
  • The listed color and / or colors
  • What zone a permanent or permanents are moved to
  • Type or types of counters

4/4

A few examples,

You can change it so that Cyclonic Rift only affects one player, even if that player was the caster of the spell

You can choose how Rolling Thunder delivers its damage

You can choose to make Armageddon only destroy Islands or nonbasics

You could make Path to Exile return your creature to the battlefield instead of exiling it. Or force it to exile someone else's creature. Or hell, make it exile their land if you want

You could make Decree of Savagery put four stun counters on creatures you don't control

The rules for this card would be a nightmare to sort out, and the jank that could be pulled in some convoluted combo, especially in Esper, is likely unfathomable and insane

Anyway, wildcard

Polaris on parnesse, the subtle brush & …

What I think you're getting at here is "Can I use Parnesse, the Subtle Brush and Cowardice to get my creature back to hand and force my opponent to pay 4 life to not give me a land from Path to Exile?"

The answer to that is no. Once Cowardice resolves, your creature will be bounced back to hand. Regardless of whether they pay for the Parnesse trigger, Path to Exile will have no valid targets left and be countered by game rules. You will not get to search for a land.
