Texas Tea

I’m going to confess a little something, I’ve really been embracing cocktails lately. I’m not much of a drinker, but occasionally I like to try a new recipe, and I have yet to be let down.

I have never had a Long Island iced tea before, so I don’t know how this compares. I will say that it is really tasty, doesn’t taste like it has alcohol in it at all, and disappeared a lot more quickly than I thought it would. It is so incredibly refreshing on a warm day. Make up a pitcher of these and keep them in your fridge. You can always mix the spirits, simple syrup, and lemon juice, and top it off with Coca-Cola when it’s time to serve. This will be the hit of your barbecue, I guarantee.

Texas Tea

1/2 oz. tequila
1/2 oz. rum
1/2 oz. triple sec
1/2 oz.
simple syrup
1/2 oz. freshly squeeze lemon juice
2 oz. Coca-Cola
Lemon wedge, for garnish

Mix everything together and pour over ice in a tall glass. You will love it!

Barraquito Cocktail

Mention tiramisu, liquid or otherwise, and you have my attention. When Richard Ayoade said that the Barraquito cocktail that he sampled in the ‘Tenerife’ episode of his show, “Travel Man” tasted like liquid tiramisu, I knew I had to try it. I wanted mine to be authentic, so I hunted down a bottle Licor 43, found a nice set of clear coffee mugs, and set to work.

It takes a talented bartender to produce the five layers that this fabulously good tasting dessert cocktail is supposed to have. I wasn’t so lucky. My numerous attempts nearly put me into a stupor, so I figured that I should be satisfied with just three. The ingredients are placed into the cup (or tall, heat-resistant shooter glass, if you prefer) in the order listed. Even slowly drizzling the espresso down the side, I couldn’t get it to layer with the Licor 43 no matter how hard I tried. It’s well worth making no matter how it turns out. Serve it on a saucer with a dessert spoon so that the imbiber can give it a good stir before savoring each sip. It’s dessert in a cup.

Purple Rain Cocktail

Just when I think I have discovered my favorite cocktail, I make something new, and then it becomes my favorite cocktail. Today I enjoyed this beautiful (much prettier than it is in the picture) cocktail called Purple Rain. It is so delightful that you’ll no doubt want to imbibe more than you probably should. Pace yourself!

It’s important, if the color is of great concern to you, that you use cranberry juice as opposed to cranberry juice cocktail. Cranberry juice cocktail does not have the depth of color that cranberry juice does. If that’s all that you have on hand, and find that your cocktail is more blue than you’d like, you can add a few drops of red food coloring until you get the color that you desire. As always, pin the top photo, and you’ll have the recipe forever.

Woot! Woot!

I must say that I am really enjoying my cocktail of the week. No surprise that indulging in them has put me in a pretty good mood. This one is delicious! Fruity and refreshing, it honestly doesn’t taste as though there’s any alcohol in it at all. The flavors blend together so well as to make a wonderfully satisfying drink. As always, pin the top picture and you’ll have the recipe forever.

Enjoy!

Holy Water

There were a couple of things that attracted me to the cocktail for this week. First of all, the color, is that not a gorgeous color, I ask you? Imagine how beautiful it would look on a table set with sea tones. This one, for example. Gorgeous! Second, it made use of the peach schnapps that I had bought for some mysterious reason, as well as citrus vodka, ditto. This drink is potent. So, don’t suck it down like you’re having an iced tea. Otherwise I doubt that you’ll see the conclusion of your movie, book, or anything else that has served as your evening’s entertainment. Don’t ask me how I know.

The recipe is on the top photo. Pin it and you’ll have it forever. I used bottled, sparkling French lemonade, and it was wonderful. Feel free to use anything that you like including Squirt or 7-Up. Wonderfully refreshing.

Fat Hooker

Once August hits, and it is here, I feel as though summer is over. Summer weather is certainly not over, and won’t be for another couple of months, but August is my stair step into September, and that’s when I start thinking about fall decorating. I mention this because I had plans to try loads of tropical drinks this summer and I didn’t get to a one of them. I plan to make up for that in the next couple of weeks sharing my results with you. Having recently purchased a bottle of peach schnapps with no idea why, I started looking for recipes that contained this as an ingredient, pleased at how many there are. Ergo, my first cocktail of this summer is the Fat Hooker.

This is a good one. It’s a nice blend of ingredients so that it doesn’t taste like too much of any one thing. I think this would be an excellent cocktail to serve with brunch. It’s far more complex and interesting than the Mimosa, and would make such a pleasant, tropical change. The only downside is that it is very refreshing and drinkable, so it’s hard to realize that it is indeed an alcoholic beverage, and to slow down.

Fat Hooker
Serves 1

1/2 oz. Peach Schnapps
1 oz. Vodka
1/2 oz. Coconut rum
4 oz. Orange juice
4 oz. Pineapple juice

Place all ingredients into a tall glass. Add ice, stir, and enjoy. Garnish as you see fit.

Sidecar

Do any of you watch Blue Bloods? I love that show. And before you get any ideas, it is not because I was such a huge Magnum, P.I. fan and I watch it exclusively to look at Tom Selleck. Well, it's not entirely like that. Anyway, the other day I was watching an old episode called Manhattan Queens where Danny (Donnie Wahlberg, who also directed) investigates the murder of a drag queen named Tiffany Lamp.  Tiffany, it seemed, liked her cocktails and drank, exclusively, Sidecars.

While I had heard the name, I really wasn't familiar with the Sidecar, so I did a little investigating. The Ritz Hotel in Paris claims origin of the drink, with the first recipes appearing in 1922. (Can you imagine what Paris was like in 1922? Ooh, la la!) It sounded très chic, so I had to give it a try and use one of my vintage cocktail glasses, because I was feeling extra fancy, and I felt oh, so sophisticated when I drank it. It's boozy, but boy is it good. I'm going to have to work on coming up with some pretty fancy appetizers, excuse me, canapés, to enjoy with this one.

Bottoms up!

Sidecar
Serves 1

1 ounce freshly squeezed Meyer lemon Juice*
1 ounce triple sec
2 ounces Cognac or brandy
Sugar
Maraschino cherry

After squeezing the lemon, rub the lemon over the rim of the cocktail glass and dip it into sugar to coat; chill glass.

In a cocktail shaker** with ice pour lemon juice, triple sec, and brandy. Cap off and shake well.  Strain into chilled sugar-rimmed glass.  Drop a cherry into the bottom and serve.

*Please use organic fruit in all of your recipes.  I recommend Melissa’s Organic Meyer Lemons.

**If you don’t happen to have a cocktail shaker, or, like me, you have one, but have no clue as to its location, a Mason jar works just fine.
