I know why Van Gogh liked to paint sunflowers. At least I know why he should. They are cheery, bright, make you smile and feel good. And I bet you could come up with more reasons. When I see sunflowers they always brighten my day. I hope they have the same affect on you.

Afternoon Sunflower
Afternoon light intensifies the colors in your photographs. So naturally, I like taking pictures that time of day. I also like the light behind the petals causing a "glow" to them.

Field of Sunflowers
It's not Italy, it's not Provence..... It's a tiny community in San Diego county called Valley Center. This small field was formerly a dairy farm that went bust in the economy. Now it's a bright spot (with lots of fertile ground).

Lunch for One?
The Italians have a great sense of marketing. This small table was nestled at the end of a narrow alley, easy to miss the restaruant hidden on the left. But set with sunflowers and all the accessories for a fine lunch, you might wander down to check it out.

Unable to Hide
Last week I talked about finding unwanted things in your photos. This is a prime example of getting surprised. I was shooting sunflowers and trying different exposure settings. I was not intending to photograph a bug on the petal. It's one of those lucky shots that just happens. As they say, "I'd rather be lucky than good". Well.... I don't know. It's pretty nice to be good too.

Desert Gold
Sunflowers evoke many emotions but the best one always brings a smile to my face. I'll never forget the first time I saw fields of sunflowers, all facing in the same direction. I was in Italy on my way to my first international workshop. I was so excited. I'd always wanted to see Italy and here I was, living it. But what surprised me was the direction the flower heads were facing. I had always believed, like many others, that they followed the sun. Not so. They face east. To greet the morning sun. So if you plant any seeds and you want to see the flowers, make sure you plan accordingly. This particular sunflower is the "Common Sunflower" that you see growing alongside country roads. Unlike the big headed seed sunflowers, these will face every direction.
