double play cardboard from mets cardboard

it was pretty clear to me that justin at mets cardboard did his homework while putting together his return trade package. there were dodgers and a set need and double play cards.  every dp card he sent was one that i did not already have.  coincidence? perhaps, but unlikely. it was good to see so many new turns at second base.  here are the rest of them (i showed some last sunday)

1992 action packed bobby richardson
old-time yankee twin killing of a twin

1993 donruss geronimo pena (back)
justin gave up the lurking met (dick schofield) on the back

1993 topps stadium club white sox joey cora
kind of a ho-hum double play turn. it looks like the runner/slider is just lying there.

1994 sportflics luis lopez
lenticular double play action!

1994 upper deck collector's choice chris gomez silver signature parallel
and 1994 upper deck collector's choice tony phillips silver signature parallel
those would both fit in my tatooine collection, too.

1997 pinnacle walt weiss
and here i thought i had all of the weiss double play cards

in addition to that pena card above, justin did a good job in checking card backs.  here's a 1997 upper deck collector's choice mark grudzielanek all-star insert (back)
1977 upper deck collector's choice edgar renteria (back)
1998 upper deck mike lansing (back)
and 1998 upper deck neifi perez (back)
which also has the same double play turn (just a bit earlier in the pivot) on the front
but back to the backs - here's a 1998 upper deck collector's choice jose valentin (back)
and a 1998 upper deck collector's choice mark grudzielanek (back)
with a nice dodger stadium backdrop and an unknown dodger rolling around at the g-man's feet.

thanks again justin! great trade!

well, hello to dodgers and double plays

i'm in the midst of some plain white envelope swappin' with brian from play at the plate. i sent him a few senators stamps from the 1971 dell's today issue, and he sent me some dodger cards from the present.

2015 bowman prospects scott schebler yellow parallel
schebler went 1 for 3 in his big league debut in june. he's back in the minors now (as of 7/12 when i wrote this post), and was named the pcl player of the week at the end of june. why is oklahoma city in the pacific coast league?  i do not know.

here's a 2015 bowman chrome prospects jose deleon card orange wave parallel that brian also sent
deleon is a starter in double-a at the moment.

brian rounded out the envelope with a couple of cards from 2015 panini prizm - jimmy rollins
and hyun-jin ryu
i doubt we will see much of ryu in 2016 product, which hopefully leaves more room for whichever pitcher the dodgers pick up at the trade deadline to receive more cards as a dodger next year.

thanks brian - be on the lookout for another standard no. 10 in the near future!

i received another return package of cards, this time in a bubble envelope, from justin at mets cardboard.  i'll show more of the cards later, but here are a few double play cards that were new to my collection

2001 pacific adam kennedy
with dodger fp santangelo sliding in. i'm guessing this is the same play showed on kennedy's 2001 topps card

2002 fleer alex gonzalez
stepping on a giants' head

2002 fleer adam kennedy
this guy again?

2002 fleer felipe lopez
a kodak moment

2002 fleer jose vidro
a candidate for the 'nob' collection, if there were such a thing. i'm still not sure.

thanks justin!

are they not all-stars?

hey folks! it's all-star tuesday, as if you didn't know.  seems like a good time to show some cards that i had thought came from an all-star set. a while back, i found this card in a repack
i recently found the entire set on sale, and so i now have two kershaws and a hanley ramirez
to complete the dodger team set.

i considered that set to be a 2014 topps national league all-stars factory set and went about my business.  however, i more recently came across the 2015 set, which included clayton kershaw
and yasiel puig
and a smaller national league logo.

the set also included this double play turn card of the cubs' javier baez
at this point, i did a double take, because baez was nowhere near an all-star last year, hitting just .169 in his limited time in the majors.  it turns out that these sets are simply a selection of national league players, which i should have known since hanley wasn't an all-star while with the dodgers, either.

this card, however, is an all-star card
given out at last year's fan fest activities in minneapolis, and it features that ol' blockhead charlie brown whose creator hailed from saint paul.  i would give a hearty 'auuuuuugh!', but even though those factory sets aren't meant to be all-star sets, i'll still keep the dodgers, so there's no need for frustration here.

i chose wisely

i mentioned in the earlier post today that i chose what turned out to be a dud of a rack pack of 2015 topps stadium club from the target shelves, but that i had also ordered some singles off of sportlots.  being able to choose specific cards means that i was not disappointed with the subsequent envelope that showed up in my mailbox.  have a look.

2015 topps stadium club fernando valenzuela
i have wanted this card ever since it was first shown on the sell sheets for the set.  it features fernando up in one of the pavilions at dodger stadium signing autographs, and is a great card with a great image from a great time in dodger history.

2015 topps stadium club yasiel puig
another great dodger stadium shot that showcases something not usually seen on cardboard - clouds and a nice socal sunset.

2015 topps stadium club dusty baker
another shot from dodger stadium - vintage johnnie b. baker.  much better than baker as a brave which was the case with allen & ginter previously

2015 topps stadium club josh beckett
i was really happy to see that beckett got a card in the set.  it's a final tribute, too, so here are the stats on the back
in addition to adrian gonzalez on the front of the card, we get a glimpse of drew butera.  this may be the only cardboard on which butera (who has never hit over .200 in any season) appears as a dodger.

speaking of lurkers, here's don newcombe lurking on jackie robinson's 2015 topps stadium club card
and here's robinson lurking on larry doby's card from the set.
but we aren't done with dodger lurkers yet, as alfredo griffin makes a cameo on former dodger lenny harris's 2015 topps stadium club card
that card features a play at second, but not a double play.  i did grab a couple of twin killing cards, however, including carlos baerga
and brandon crawford
both feature world series double plays, too.

last but not least is this 2015 topps stadium club kevin gausman card
that i purchased due to the fact that he's wearing the alternate black jersey, and so it has the orange text tom clancy memorial patch.  i've updated the post specific to that patch, by the way.

it's tough for me to refrain from purchasing packs every once in a while, and i won't go back to swearing off packs as i did at some point in the past, but it does make a lot more sense to pick cards up on the secondary market.

here are some cards from 2015 topps series 2

well, topps finally put don mattingly on a card in their flagship set, but they did so on a josh beckett highlight/checklist card
it's not even a final tribute card for beckett.  still, i like it.

i bought a dodger team set on ebay, and found that topps went horizontal a few more times for the dodgers in their series two set - here's the 'team' card
plus two more clayton kershaw cards - cy young
and mvp
it's been said before, but i would prefer the checklist expansion topps heralded this year provide cards for the likes of justin turner and scott van slyke and even juan nicasio instead of four kershaw cards.  i don't mind the base (obviously) or the highlight/checklist cards, but award winner cards are not my favorite. i'd rather see other players from the roster at that point.  along those lines, here's carlos frias
most of the other dodgers from series two were shown in the recent flagship vs. factory set post, and i've only scanned a few cards from a blaster i purchased.  i did get this nolan ryan/sandy koufax eclipsing history insert
about which i have three comments.  first, the design of this insert (and all of the inserts in series two that i've seen) is really boring.  second, the history that ryan is eclipsing was established by koufax as a los angeles dodger, not a brooklyn dodger.  third, if ryan is eclipsing koufax, shouldn't he be in the foreground?  details, i suppose.

there were three twins cards that i chose to scan - the first being this ervin santana card
santana takes the mound for the first time as a twin today after serving his suspension for ped use.  i thought that topps would wait and include him in update as a result.

i like this jordan schafer card
a couple of years ago it would have likely been a variation short print, so it's nice to see topps using good photos for base cards.  schafer was released by the twins just a couple of days before i saw this card, by the way.

here's another twinkies card that features target field
with a clean-shaven joe mauer in the foreground and oswaldo arcia's back on the jumbotron.

i'll finish up this series two post with a couple of double plays - dj lemahieu
and joe panik
i was hoping for another justin turner dp in series two, but i guess i'll have to wait for update.
