Abstract

We are delighted to welcome you to the 20th Brazilian Symposium on Multimedia and the Web - WebMedia'14. WebMedia'14 is an annual symposium sponsored by the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC) and is the most important forum for researchers and professionals in the Multimedia, Hypermedia and Web areas in Brazil. WebMedia's 20th edition is held from November 18th to November 21st, 2014, in João Pessoa, capital of Paraíba -- Brazil.

WebMedia'14 is organized by the Digital Video Applications Lab (LAVID) from the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB) and has many other sponsors and supporters including CGI.br, NIC.br, CAPES, CNPq and CYTED also listed elsewhere in these proceedings.

The central feature of the symposium, which continues this year as in every year since its inception, is its outstanding Technical Program. Notably, this year's conference includes special Technical Program activities recognizing the 20th anniversary of WebMedia. The symposium's technical program is composed by technical sessions, short courses, panels, workshops (Thesis and Dissertation Workshop, Tools and Applications Workshop and Undergraduate Research Workshop), as well as keynote speakers invited talks.

WebMedia'14 proceedings include 25 full papers and 12 short papers. These papers were selected from 86 full paper submissions and 30 short paper submissions, for acceptance rates of 29% and 40%, respectively. The Symposium's Program Committee worked very hard to select papers that will be presented and published from among many submissions of excellent quality. We thank all the submitting authors for their research efforts and for their submissions and congratulate those who had their work accepted.

In addition to the Technical Program, this year's symposium features a diverse range of activities including Panels and Keynote Speakers. Additionally, a wide array of Workshops brings focus on new topics for investigation. Finally, the symposium provides an invited performance to stimulate artists and researchers alike to meet and discover the frontiers of multimedia artistic communication!

This year celebrates the 20th Anniversary of WebMedia, which was first initiated in 1995. To mark this auspicious occasion, the conference features a 20th Anniversary Award and a 20th Anniversary Invited Talk. These two events reflect on major milestones and achievements in multimedia as well as discuss promising ideas and directions for the future during the WebMedia'14!
