Absolutely spoiled rotten!

No kidding, I feel very privileged to receive this wonderful stitching.  The ladies in this group gave me more than I could imagine.  Nicki Lee, Meg, Rita and Darlene added some marvellous details as you can see.  Rita added the beautifully embellished  fan.  Nicki Lee the appliqued geisha with her pretty hair ornament, fan and flowers at her feet and the cherry blossom broach to the right of the geisha's head and added some
sparkle to the printed fans, third photo from top.  Darlene added the button cluster, gold character, diamond seam with pearls and stars, the seam on the peony patch, Mount Fiji, and feather stitch patch with the pearls.  Meg did everything else, the unusual crochet fan with her signature gold wheel, the pretty fan seam to the left of the crochet fan and the green and pink seam in the second photo from the top.
Well......true to form, all the photos have changed order when I changed them from centred to right align, who knows why!  But they are staying the way they are.

Nicki Lee's CQI Asian RR heading home

Well, this block was such a pleasure to work on.  It came so beautifully embellished from  Meg, Rita and Darlene, the whole time I was doing my bit on it, I was analysing and enjoying theirs.

The fan was printed on to the patch which was a great start, and each section of the fan turned into a mini patch, so much fun!

I added a flower bead and feather stitch to another seam and wove  through it red and metallic thread.  On the patch below it I outlined a gold design.

I filled in the geisha's underskirt with yellow stitching, did the seam to the right of the fan, and also the one above the geisha's head, then carried down to the next seam with the lazy daisy stitches filled with black tiny beads.   And just below that I added a dragon charm.

This RR has produced some stunning blocks, and pushed me to do new techniques.

More on Meg's Asian RR block.....

Honestly, I had Meg's block wrapped up, sealed, addressed and in my bag to take to the post office and I just couldn't do it.  The Mandella was bugging me because the beads didn't really lay the way I wanted to, and this block is exquisite and my bit of beading stuck out like a sore thumb!  I had used delicas which are a size 11/0 but for the new mandella, I went to a smaller size 13/0 Charlottes which made a much neater job.  I had to take some liberty with the design, but it is now ready to mail.

The next photo is the bottom part of the block with my stuff.

Meg's Asian block ready to move on!

Ohhhh.....I've been battling for an hour this morning to get these photos to go in the right order, but there seems to be no logic to loading pictures.   I can't waste any more time on this, it is what it is.  When Meg's Asian block arrived I was in awe of the stitching already completed by Rita and Darlene.  To start with Meg puts together beautifully pieced blocks with lovely material.  Her theme for the block was Arabian.  I searched the web for some inspiration and came up with a carpet, a mandella and a tile design. Above is the carpet on the block, and the inspiration carpet on the left.

Next is an Arabian tile design which I duplicated on squared paper using one of Carole Samples templates.  The paper was great to keep the pattern straight.   The design is embroidered with gold thread and is quite delicate.

The fabric next to the silky was covered in ferns printed in gold on the fabric I went over it in fly stitch with gold thread.   The mandella was also taken from an Arabian design which I did mostly in beads.  Next the block moves on to Nicki Lee who will work her magic!

Rita's Asian RR Block

Rita mentioned in her booklet that she sent with her block, that she used all Japanese kimono fabrics. They are quite bold designs, and mostly in navy blue and white. The exception is the lovely silkie.

The block came to me with Darlene's lovely work.  Her appliqued fan is beautiful and brought a splash of green which she echoed in a blue/green ricrac seam below the geisha.

When I first began CQing a couple of years ago I picked up anything and everything that I thought I could use.  One of my first purchases was a bag of bamboo beads.  Tiny ones that work perfectly in my stand of bamboo at the top of the block. For the "knuckles" of the branch I used a very pale green variegated #5 Needle Necessities perle.  And for the leaves a light green 2mm silk ribbon.

Just down from the bamboo I made some bullion chrysanthimums using  Edmar Glory and for the leaves 4mm dark green silk ribbon.

The butterfly in the corner is the only one I made when I was teaching myself needle tatting, and i've sparkled it up with a few sequins and tiny crystal beads.

Now it is time to send it on.

Darlene's Asian RR

Here is Darlene's Nekid Asian RR block.  It is another of the Round Robins organized by CQI.  I am the first in the RR to work on this wonderful blue block inspired by a willow pattern plate.  I love blue so this was a delight for me to work on and I have a nice selection of blue threads and beads in my stash.  I began with a patch of Edmar Frost feather stitches and added a couple of lazy daisies to each stem.  Then I added two rows of herringbone with sequins and beads in the spaces.  After that, three fans in different shades of blue Edmar Frost, mostly lazy daisy and beadingNext came a white bullion chrysanthimum with clear bead leaves and navy stems.  And finally a row of buttonhole with a pearl in each space.  The final photo is a of all my work on Darlene's block.

Three Asian Blocks

Finally, here are the three Asian blocks.  The one on the left is my original one that I made a bit bolder.  The lighting isn't the best, but you can get the general idea.

Another Asian Block

I've been on a bit of a roll with block piecing with the round robins that are beginning soon and a block for the 2010 Challenges.  The Asian block that will be rr'ing is just one of three blocks in a wall hanging that I am planning to make.  The inspiration is from this book .  My hanging will be on a smaller scale, three diamonds wide.  So while I still had my Asian rr in the house, I thought I'd make the other two.  This is one that I have finished and I love it's brightness.  Only trouble is that the Asian rr one is now a bit too pale so I will have to jazz it up a bit before I send it off.  I remember at the Retreat that there was a mention of a finished cq quilt challenge due in 2011 - this will be my entry.

Busy, busy, busy....

How can it be 3 weeks since I blogged last! Time just slips away. I haven't done a lot of stitching, but I have managed to work on piecing some of the RR blocks that I have signed up for in the New Year. This is my naked block for the Asian #2 RR. The design is similar to part of a wall hanging that I liked and mentioned in a previous posting. The fan fabric only came in those vibrant (fluorescent!) colours, but I'm going to encourage my RR friends to bead/embroider/embellish over them to tone them down a bit!
This could either be for the Brazillian embroidery RR or the Stumpwork RR. I haven't decided yet.
And this is the design, on paper, for the CQI 2010 Challenge. The first few monthly challenges include curved piecing, fans, working with velvet, birds and 5-layer stitching. Stumpwork and Silk Ribbon embroidery are two more that I have signed up for and need to make blocks, but so far they are one or two short of being filled.
