Undead army wyvern #2

Undead army just got another fast attack unit.

After finishing the "serpentine" wyvern I was actually hoping for a bit more from the rider. Thought it would be bit more "epic" - it's wight lord after all. On the other hand it's just better dressed and armoured skeleton so I guess it fits the mount. To make it more coherent with the other units model got black-and-white stripes on the shield. It got spike in the middle 'cause shield to hide the pin - don't want it to fall off in the heat of the battle...

It's a big model so I tried to take some herohammer styled pics for group shots. Using large game mat was good idea but the landscale background is just too small. I think I'll just have to paint one sometimes instead just using prints.

So here they are:
diving from the blue sky to bring death and destruction to the empire of men! Bwah! Ha! Ha!

Another scale shot:
(most probably) about to get dead-ass kicked bit time by Khorne's daemon prince:

And here matched duel with greenskins wyvern:

Supporting unit of zombies:

This is where the magic happens. Looking at the picture I am quite sure I need like twice wide background for taking pics of large units or armies. The game mat I use comes from terrains4games - definitely recommend stuff they make!

And some close ups:

Thanks for reading.
Next stop: dark future... 💀

Undead army - current state

Oldhammer Weekend Poland 2022 project is nearly done - just a few characters left to be painted and replaced. Among them there is a wraith champion.
I really like those floating housecoats, but I have dilemma about choosing color scheme:
should it be 90's color combo or maybe ghostly-white - for strong contrast with the army.

I posted short poll on Middlehammer FB group to help me make that crucial decision and I was asked to show the rest of the army to make voting easier. So here it is.

I have no idea how to take decent pics of such size - I think large backdrop sure would be helpful. But photos give overall impression what is under command of my Lords of the Dead. There's still a lot to be painted to finish WHOLE army:
cavalry, another screaming skull catapult, metal skellies, more zombies, wights, wraiths, wight lord on wyvern, Dieter Helsnicht on manticore and more characters... 😨

Lots of fun for long winter evenings 🧛‍♂️

Undead carrions

"In ages past gigantic birds of prey lived amongst the peaks of the World Edge Mountains..."

Another 2 models left (actually: flew down) the painting desk: pair of undead birds of prey - carrions. Army of the Undead has grown by 90 points and another unit has been finished!
I remember I got the these models yet during high school times but shortly later Vampire Counts were released so carrions were forced to retire... 😒

Back days whole unit ended up in the pile of shame: I didn't like paintjob and couldn't use them in Vampire Counts army. But years later, when the Middlehammer Undead Army was born, models were washed and I looked at them from the other angle. There were just cool.

Few years back 2 carrions were painted and now remaining pair joined their undead siblings. Despite models are bit goofy I like them a lot and I'm very glad they finally got paintjob. These sculpts bring back lots of memories. I am quite sure whole that Undead Army thing will drag out even more nostalgia. Funny feeling actually. This thinking about past is like I am summarizing my life. Preparing for something. Can't get it out of my head.

I also like the bases are a bit scenic - all those little details make model alive (or rather: living dead...😋 ) and therefore more interesting. Skeleton remains come from 2 or 3 skellies which ended up as parts donors during my years in hobby. Breast plate and left arm come from old plastics, which were bit smaller then multipart skeleton regiment. I'm really glad these two were taken out of pile of shame. Some more deaders next time 💀

So here they are - whole dead birds flock worth 180 points:

And the ones just painted:

Take care 👻

Middlehammer 2500 pts Undead army

Heya,

Recently I came back to painting oldie Undead models - those from the very beginning of my Warhammer adventure (mid 90's that is).
While digging through the remains of the collection lots of warm memories woke up in my corrupted brain. Warm enough to make me start another long distance painting project.

Back days I've managed to assemble and paint 2500 pts Vampire Counts force (based on 5th WFB edition rules) but shortly after last model was finished my gaming group fallen apart (bloody bastards... ><) and whole thing found new home through Ebay miniatures adoption center.
Now I really regret that step, because the army contained some models hardly available now. Available for decent price that is.

Anyway after paitning Nagash I though it would be nice to see fully painted army of the restless dead once again especially after browsing oldie Undead army book.
The big plan is to bring 2500 pts army, based on tournament rules (no special characters, 50 pts magic items limit etc) to existence.
First thought was to give it shape and colors of Undead force from Dark Omen game (which was supercool), but I think I'll rather try something more colorful, something more into original Undead army book.

And yeah, I want to raise Undead force, not Vampire Counts, which means there'll be carrions, mummies and hopefully chariots. I've never fielded unit of mummies but always loved the idea of these shambling, flammable monstrocities.
And the pyramid standing in the middle of "medieval" Heroes of Might and Magic 2 Necromancer Town was sooo damn funny!

So without further introduction here's the basic shape of what I am hoping to see in the end.
Hoping, because part of models is yet to be hunted.
Final shape of the army surely will be evolving during the progress but here's the starting list, including magic gizmos:

  1. Vampire Lord, Carstein Ring, Black Amulet, Blade of Ensorcelled Iron (495)
  2. Necromancer, Dispel MAgic Scroll (93)
  3. Skeleton warrior x22, inc. standard bearer and musician, Banner of Defiance (302)
Wight Champion, heavy armour, Parrying Blade (60)
  4. Necromancer, skeleton steed, Dispel Magic Scroll (99)
  5. Mummy x10 (450)
  6. Carrion x4 (180)
  7. Chariot, scythed wheels (76)
  8. Ghoul x15 (120)
  9. Skeleton horseman x5, inc. standard bearer and musician, lance, light armout, shield, Doomrider Banner (305)
Wight Champion, skeleton steed, lancem heavy armour, shield, Ring of Darkness (84)
  10. Screaming Skull Catapult (74)
  11. Wraith x4 (300)
And for good start I managed to paint pair of oldie carrions (90 points in total!).
I still have mixed feelings about this unit: gamewise is't ok, the drawing in WFRP book is cool but as for the sculpt - you gotta love old/middlehammer to field it I guess. Apparently do so...
I am still not sure about ghost riders wearing bright rags, but I think it provides nice contrast to rather boring mounts:

See you next time!
