It was contested over twenty-two laps. This race saw the début of the 1000cc engine motorcycles introduced in the MotoGP class for this season and also the début of the Honda RC213V, replacing the 800cc engines and the Honda RC212V that were used between 2007 and 2011, and also the début of the 125cc 2-stroke replacement class, Moto3, which are powered by 250cc (15.2 cu in) 4-stroke engines. Tuvo lugar el fin de semana del 6 al 8 de abril de 2012 en el Circuito Internacional de Losail, situado en la ciudad de Doha, Catar. La carrera se corrió por la noche. La carrera de MotoGP empezó a las 23:00 hora local. Además se estrenó la nueva categoría de Moto3 al sustituir a los 125 cc. La carrera de MotoGP fue ganada por Jorge Lorenzo, seguido de Dani Pedrosa y Casey Stoner. Marc Márquez fue el ganador de la prueba de Moto2, por delante de Andrea Iannone y Pol Espargaró.
