The Red Sox finished second in the American League East with a record of 82 wins and 79 losses, 13+1⁄2 games behind the New York Yankees, who went on to win the AL championship. The Red Sox did not qualify for the postseason, as the AL wild card went to the Oakland Athletics, who had finished second in the American League West with a record of 102–60.
