Se inicia a partir de la región de la Araucanía y termina aproximadamente en el Seno de Reloncaví. Incluye la provincia de Arauco en la Región del Biobío y las zonas al sur del Río Biobío, las regiones de La Araucanía y Los Ríos y las provincias de Osorno, Llanquihue y Chiloé de la Región de los Lagos. Esta área es una de las más heterogéneas en cuanto a paisajes y actividades económicas. Con un clima que poco a poco se vuelve más húmedo, el terreno se cubre de extensos bosques y numerosos lagos, como el lago Villarrica y el lago Llanquihue. - Zona Sur (Southern Zone) is one of the five natural regions on which CORFO divided continental Chile in 1950. Its northern border is formed by the Bío-Bío River, which separates it from the Central Chile Zone. The Southern Zone borders the Pacific Ocean to the west, and to the east lies the Andean mountains and Argentina. Its southern border is the Chacao Channel, which forms the boundary with the Austral Zone. While the Chiloé Archipelago belongs geographically to the Austral Zone in terms of culture and history, it lies closer to the Southern Zone. (en)
- De Zona Sur (Nederlands: Zuidelijke Zone) is een van de vijf traditionele geografische regio's van Chili. De Zona Sur ligt in het midden-zuiden van Chili, tussen de 38e en de 43e breedtegraad, ten zuiden van de Zona Central en ten noorden van de Extremo Sur. De Zona Sur omvat de bestuurlijke regio's Araucanië, Los Ríos en het noordelijke deel van Los Lagos. De noordgrens wordt gevormd door de Bío-Bío-rivier, die tot 1861 de de facto zuidgrens van Chili vormde, de Zona Sur was destijds in handen van de Mapuche. In dat jaar besloot president José Joaquín Pérez over te gaan tot de verovering en kolonisatie van de regio, de '', die in 1883 volooid was. De Zona Sur is het vochtigste gebied van Chili. Het heeft daarom een groen uiterlijk en is geschikt voor landbouw en bosbouw en kenmerkt zich door talloze meren. Steden in de Zona Sur zijn Angol, La Unión, Osorno, Puerto Montt, Temuco en Valdivia.
