- Tepito ist ein Barrio in Mexiko-Stadt, das aus 72 Häuserblöcken besteht, in denen 120.000 Menschen leben. Das Barrio Tepito ist für seine Straßenmärkte berühmt und für seine hohe Kriminalitätsrate berüchtigt. Straßenkriminalität kommt sehr häufig vor. So gab es beispielsweise im Jahr 2006 in der Colonia Morelos, zu der das Barrio Tepito gehört, insgesamt 317 Überfälle auf Fußgänger. Bei den meisten handelte es sich um Taschendiebstähle. Se caracteriza por su historia, tradiciones y su alta actividad comercial —su vocación en ella se remonta a la época prehispánica—, así como por problemáticas sociales como la delincuencia y drogadicción. Tiene un sitio peculiar en la identidad capitalina, por lo que la importancia cultural de Tepito ha sido remarcada por intelectuales y artistas nacionales e internacionales. Es la cuna de distintas manifestaciones sociales y culturales, así como el sitio de donde han surgido afamados deportistas. Debido al carácter de sus habitantes, a las luchas sociales en distintos momentos de su historia, así como a la resistencia por la conservación de su identidad, ha merecido el apelativo de barrio bravo. - Tepito is een wijk in Mexico-Stad. Het is gelegen in de gemeente Cuauhtémoc, even ten noorden van het Historisch Centrum. In Mexico-Stad staat de plaats bekend als een gevaarlijke en criminele buurt. Er opereren verschillende bendes en op de markten in de wijk worden voornamelijk gestolen of anderszins illegale waren verkocht. Uit Tepito zijn verschillende bekende boksers en worstelaars afkomstig. Ook de voetballer Cuauhtémoc Blanco, de acteur Cantinflas en de zangeressen María de Lourdes en hebben in Tepito gewoond. In maart 2007 werden er bij een grote politieoverval grote hoeveelheden illegale goederen in beslag genomen, werden straatverkopers uit de buurt verdreven en werden verschillende drugspanden onteigend.
