- The twenty-fifth season of British science fiction television series Doctor Who began on 5 October 1988. It comprised four separate serials, beginning with Remembrance of the Daleks and ending with The Greatest Show in the Galaxy. To mark the 25th anniversary season, producer John Nathan-Turner brought back the Daleks and the Cybermen. The American New Jersey Network also made a special behind-the-scenes documentary called The Making of Doctor Who, which followed the production of the 25th anniversary story Silver Nemesis. Andrew Cartmel script edited the series. (en)

Estrelou Sylvester McCoy como o Sétimo Doutor e como . Para marcar os 25 anos da série, o produtor trouxe de volta os Daleks e os Cybermen. A também fez um documentário especial dos bastidores da temporada chamado The Making of Doctor Who, que seguiu a produção do serial do 25º aniversário, Silver Nemesis. A 25.ª temporada viu o começo de um movimento para explorar o passado do Doutor; Andrew Cartmel, editor de roteiros, achava que, à medida que mais da própria história do personagem, juntamente com a história dos Senhores do Tempo, fosse revelada, parte do mistério sobre o Doutor se perdera. Como consequência, ele, junto com os roteiristas Ben Aaronovitch e Marc Platt, começaram a desenvolver as sementes de uma nova história de fundo, que seria sugerida durante toda a temporada, que sugeria que o Doutor fosse mais poderoso do que a maioria das pessoas estava ciente.
