- NGC 4424 ist eine Balken-Spiralgalaxie vom Hubble-Typ SBa im Sternbild Jungfrau auf der Ekliptik. Sie ist schätzungsweise 17 Millionen Lichtjahre von der Milchstraße entfernt und hat einen Durchmesser von etwa 20.000 Lichtjahren. Bei dem Objekt handelt es sich um eine sogenannte Edge-On-Galaxie, d. h. wir sehen sie genau in Kantenstellung. Die Spiralarme erscheinen hier nur als dunkle staubhaltige Wolken, beleuchtet vom hellen Zentrum der Galaxie. Des Weiteren ist sie als Starburst-Galaxie klassifiziert, hier entstehen gerade mit ungewöhnlich hoher Rate neue Sterne, Auslöser dafür könnte die Nähe der Galaxie IC 3366 sein. Gemeinsam mit zwölf weiteren Galaxien bildet sie die NGC 4442-Gruppe (LGG 288) und wird unter der Katalognummer VCC 979 als Mitglied des Virgo-Galaxienhaufens aufgeführt. Im selben Himmelsareal befinden sich u. a. die Galaxien NGC 4417, NGC 4445, IC 3350, IC 3366. Die Supernovae SN 1895A und SN 2012cg (Typ Ia) wurden hier beobachtet. Das Objekt wurde am 27. Februar 1865 von dem deutsch-dänischen Astronomen Heinrich d'Arrest mit einem 28-cm-Teleskop entdeckt. (de)

- NGC 4424 est une galaxie spirale barrée située dans la constellation de la Vierge à environ 46 millions d'années-lumière de la Voie lactée. Elle a été découverte par l'astronome prussien Heinrich d'Arrest en 1865. La classe de luminosité de NGC 4424 est I et elle présente une large raie HI. Elle renferme également des régions d'hydrogène ionisé. NGC 4424 présente un disque tronqué et en raison de son mouvement dans le milieu intergalactique dans l'amas de la Viege, elle subit une pression dynamique qui la dépouille de ses gaz, mais elle présente un taux normal de formation d'étoiles. La vitesse radiale de 437 km/s de cette galaxie est trop faible pour qu'on puisse lui appliquer la loi de Hubble-Lemaître pour calculer sa distance. Heureusement, des mesures non basées sur le décalage vers le rouge (redshift) ont été réalisées. Le résultat de ces mesures donnent une distance de 14,110 ± 4,183 Mpc (∼46 millions d'a.l.). (fr)
- NGC 4424 is a spiral galaxy located in the equatorial constellation of Virgo. It was discovered February 27, 1865 by German astronomer Heinrich Louis d'Arrest. This galaxy is located at a distance of 13.5 million light years and is receding with a heliocentric radial velocity of 442 km/s. It has a morphological class of SB(s)a, which normally indicates a spiral galaxy with a barred structure (SB), no inner ring feature (s), and tightly-wound spiral arms (a). The galactic plane is inclined at an angle of 62° to the line of sight from the Earth. It is a likely member of the Virgo Cluster of galaxies. The galaxy NGC 4424 has a peculiar morphology with shells that give the appearance of a galaxy merger within the last half billion years. It has a long tail of hydrogen stretching 110 kpc to the south that is likely due to stripping from ram pressure. Because of the lack of gas, star formation has completely ceased in the outer parts of the galaxy, while there is still a mild amount occurring in the inner region. NGC 4424 will most likely end up as a lenticular galaxy by three billion years from now. There is no indication of a compact source of X-ray emission in the nucleus, but there is an ionized tail stretching ~10 kpc from the core. The velocity dispersion at the core suggests there is a supermassive black hole (SMBH) with a mass of (0.8±0.2)×105 M☉. Hubble images of this galaxy show a tidally-stretched cluster located at a projected distance of ~400 pc from the nucleus. This is probably the core of a captured galaxy. It contains a compact source that is emitting X-rays and may be an active massive black hole. In time this may merge with the core SMBH of NGC 4424. A Type Ia supernova designated SN 2012cg was discovered in this galaxy by the LOSS program from images taken May 17, 2012. It reached maximum light nine days later at the end of May. The supernova reached a peak absolute magnitude of −19.50±0.31 in the B (blue) band and synthesized 0.72±0.31 M☉ of the radioactive isotope nickel-56. The available observations favor a merger of double degenerate progenitors as the source for the event. The proximity of the galaxy made this one of the best studied supernova explosions to date. È un membro dell'Ammasso della Vergine che fa parte del Superammasso della Vergine che è ora considerata una sottostruttura di Laniakea. Ha un diametro di circa 50.000 anni luce. La presenza di gas e polveri disposte lungo il disco galattico impediscono la visuale della struttura interna della galassia.Si ritiene che NGC 4424, entro i prossimi 3 miliardi di anni, esaurirà il gas residuo e, nei miliardi di anni successivi, si esauriranno le strutture stellari più esterne. La galassia si trasformerà in una galassia lenticolare con un raggio di 6.500 anni luce.
