- Kilometersteine an Gebirgspässen sind spezielle Kilometersteine, die Fahrradfahrer über ihre momentane Position bezüglich der Passhöhe informieren. Sie geben grundsätzlich Informationen in Fahrtrichtung des Gipfels an. In manchen Fällen ist die Beschriftung beidseitig und informiert somit auch Radfahrer, die bergab unterwegs sind. Kilometersteine an Gebirgspässen sind vor allem für Radfahrer hilfreich, die die Streckenführung nicht kennen. Allgemein helfen sie Radfahrern Erholungspausen zu planen oder sich Getränke und Nahrung einzuteilen. Aus Sicht der Institutionen, welche diese Beschilderung aufstellen, zum Beispiel die Generalräte der Départments in Frankreich, handelt es sich um eine Investition zur Förderung des Fahrradtourismus. They always provide information for cyclists going uphill. Sometimes the signs are two-sided, thereby providing information also for cyclists going downhill. Mountain pass cycling milestones are particularly useful to cyclists that are not familiar with the climbs. In general, they allow cyclists to schedule breaks as well as to plan food and liquid uptake. They furthermore can serve as motivational landmarks. Local institutions invest in this cycling infrastructure to offer service to cyclists, thus promoting tourism in their region. (en)
