Mission

The Community Seismic Network ("CSN") is a low-cost, MEMS-sensor and cloud-based, strong-motion seismic network whose mission is to:

  1. Provide maps of maximum shaking immediately following a major earthquake to help direct first responders.
  2. Monitor the health and safety of structures.
  3. Create zonation maps of shaking potential in populated areas.
  4. Provide data for the ShakeAlert earthquake early warning system.

CSN is a collaborative research effort between Caltech and UCLA involving academic civil engineers, seismologists, and computer scientists.
