Test beam results with prototypes for the new Cylindrical GEM Inner Tracker of the BESIII experiment / CGEM-IT Collaboration
A cylindrical GEM tracker is under construction in order to replace and improve the inner tracking system of the BESIII experiment. Tests with planar chamber prototypes were carried out on the H4 beam line of SPS (CERN) with muons of 150 GeV/c momentum, to evaluate the efficiency and resolution under different working conditions. The Cylindrical GEM-Inner Tracker (CGEM-IT) is the upgrade of the internal tracking system of the BESIII experiment. It consists of three layers of cylindrically-shaped triple GEMs, with important innovations with respect to the existing GEM detectors, in order to achieve the best performance with the lowest material budget. A new $G$-parity violating amplitude in the $J/\psi$ decay? / Ferroli, R. Baldini (Frascati) ; De Mori, F. (INFN, Turin ; Turin U.) ; Destefanis, M. (INFN, Turin ; Turin U.) ; Maggiora, M. (INFN, Turin ; Turin U.) ; Pacetti, S. (INFN, Perugia ; Perugia U.) ; Yan, L. (Hefei, CUST) ; Bertani, M. (Frascati) ; Calcaterra, A. (Frascati) ; Felici, G. (Frascati) ; Patteri, P. (Frascati) et al.
The $J/\psi$ meson has negative $G$-parity so that, in the limit of isospin conservation, its decay into $\pi^+\pi^-$ should be purely electromagnetic. However, the measured branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(J/\psi\to\pi^+\pi^-)$ exceeds by more than 3.9 standard deviations the expectation computed according to BaBar data on the $e^+e^-\to\pi^+\pi^-$ cross section. The beam and detector of the NA62 experiment at CERN / NA62 Collaboration
NA62 is a fixed-target experiment at the CERN SPS dedicated to measurements of rare kaon decays. Such measurements, like the branching fraction of the $K^{+} \rightarrow \pi^{+} \nu \bar\nu$ decay, have the potential to bring significant insights into new physics processes when comparison is made with precise theoretical predictions. Search for heavy neutral lepton production in $K^+$ decays / NA62 Collaboration
A search for heavy neutral lepton production in $K^+$ decays using a data sample collected with a minimum bias trigger by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2015 is reported. Upper limits at the $10^{-7}$ to $10^{-6}$ level are established on the elements of the extended neutrino mixing matrix $|U_{\ell 4}|^2$ ($\ell=e,\mu$) for heavy neutral lepton mass in the range $170-448~{\rm MeV}/c^2$. Gas detector are very light instrument used in high energy physics to measure the particle properties: position and momentum. Through high electric field is possible to use the Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) technology to detect the charged particles and to exploit their properties to construct a large area detector, such as the new IT for BESIII. Gas detector development is one of the pillars of the research in fundamental physics. Since several years, a new concept of detectors, called Micro Pattern Gas Detector (MPGD), allowed to overcome several problems related to other types of commonly used detectors, like drift chamber and micro strips detectors, reducing the rate of discharges and providing better radiation tolerance. Search for $K^+$ decays to a muon and invisible particles / NA62 Collaboration
The NA62 experiment at CERN reports searches for $K^+\to\mu^+N$ and $K^+\to\mu^+\nu X$ decays, where $N$ and $X$ are massive invisible particles, using the 2016-2018 data set. The $N$ particle is assumed to be a heavy neutral lepton, and the results are expressed as upper limits of ${\cal O}(10^{-8})$ of the neutrino mixing parameter $|U_{\mu4}|^2$ for $N$ masses in the range 200-384 MeV/$c^2$ and lifetime exceeding 50 ns.
