Crab cavities are a critical component within the High Luminosity upgrade project for the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). It is foreseen to use crab cavities in order to compensate the geometric luminosity reduction factor (reduction of the luminous region at the Interaction Point [IP]) due to the beam crossing angle (required for minimizing the impact of the long range beam-beam effects on the single particle beam dynamics) and increase the number of collisions per bunch crossing. A local Crab Cavity (CC) scheme will recover head-on collisions at the Interaction Points (IPs) of the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), which aims to increase the LHC luminosity by a factor of 3-10. The first time that CC will ever be tested with proton beams will be in 2018 in the SPS machine. [...]

Emittance Growth in Coast in the SPS at CERN

The HL-LHC prototype crab-cavities are installed in the CERN SPS, which, for the first time, will allow for a comprehensive beam test with high energy protons. As the time available for experimental beam dynamics studies with the crab cavities installed in the machine will be limited, a very good preparation is required. [...]

The LHC Upgrade, called High Luminosity LHC, aims to increase the integrated luminosity by a factor of 10. To achieve this, the project relies on a number of key innovative technologies, including the use of superconducting Crab Cavities with ultra-precise phase control for beam rotation. [...]

SPS Long Term Stability Studies in the Presence of Crab Cavities and High Order Multipoles

A local Crab Cavity (CC) scheme will recover the head-on collisions at the IP of the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), which aims to increase the LHC luminosity by a factor of 3-10. The tight space constraints at the CC location result in axially non-symmetric cavity designs that introduce high order multipole CC components. [...]

Investigation of Damping Effects of the Crab Cavity Noise Induced Emittance Growth

Crab cavities will be installed at the two main interaction points (IP1 and IP5) of the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) in order to minimize the geometric reduction of the luminosity due to the crossing angle. Two prototype crab cavities have been installed into the SPS machine and were tested with a proton beam in 2018, to study the expected emittance growth induced by RF noise. [...]

Machine protection experience from beam tests with crab cavity prototypes in the CERN SPS

Crab cavities (CCs) constitute a key component of the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) project. In case of a failure, they can induce significant transverse beam offsets within tens of microseconds, necessitating a fast removal of the circulating beam to avoid damage to accelerator components due to losses from the displaced beam halo. As part of the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) project strategy, crab cavity correctors shall be installed around CMS and ATLAS experiments of the LHC. To accommodate the different crossing angle planes, two distinct cavity designs have been selected: the RF Dipole (RFD) and the Double Quarter Wave resonator (DQW). [...]
