EARLY-CAREER RESEARCHERS IN MEDICAL APPLICATIONS @ CERN – SHORT TALKS
Discover how technological advances for high-energy physics have become essential tools for modern medicine.  This series of short talks is given by Early-Career Researchers working on projects related to diverse medical applications that arise from technology developed at CERN and in high-energy physics. In this seminar 2 ECRs working on the GaToroid project will share their work. GaToroid is part of the Next Ion Medical Machine Study (NIMMS) project which outlines an umbrella R&D programme for the development of critical accelerator technologies related to ion therapy; the programme builds on existing activities and on core CERN competences.   The GaToroid project aims to develop a new type of gantry for hadron therapy. The novel concept defined in 2017 by Luca Bottura uses the axis-symmetry from a toroidal field to bend the beam and deliver it to the patient from several directions [...]

In this seminar 2 Researchers (one, an assistant professor at UNIMIB and the other, a CERN doctoral student) will share their work on TOF-PET. Time-of-Flight (TOF) Positron Emission Tomography (PET) uses the time difference between the two annihilation photons to improve the Signal-to-Noise-Ration (SNR) compared to standard PET. A 10ps full-width-half-maximum (FWHM) coincidence time resolution (CTR) would mean a huge improvement in the SNR and spatial resolution, with an uncertainty of only 1.5mm [...]

Discover how technological advances for high-energy physics have become essential tools for modern medicine.  This series of short talks is given by Early-Career Researchers working on projects related to diverse medical applications that arise from technology developed at CERN and in high-energy physics. The short talks from CERN researchers will focus on PET, Simulations and Dosimetry in Surgery Team 2.7 from the recent Medtech:Hack will also present their winning project which aims to find solutions for people in rural areas to get better access to vital healthcare.  See more about the Medtech: Hack here. Attendance is open to all without registration. If you require a CERN access card please contact us. Coffee will be served at 15.30   For information about the next Knowledge Transfer Seminar, sign up to our e-group at http://cern.ch/go/F9cX

PHYSTAT seminar: From COVID-19 Testing to Election Prediction: How Small Are Our Big Data? / Meng, Xiao-Li (speaker) (Harvard University)
The term “Big Data” emphasizes data quantity, not quality. What will be the effective sample size when we take into account the deterioration of data quality because of, for example, the selection bias in COVID-19 testing or the non-response bias in 2016 US Election polling results? This talk provides an answer to such questions, based on the concept of data defect index (ddi) developed in [1]. It will also discuss briefly the application of ddi for 2020 US Election, as reported in [2]. [1] Xiao-Li Meng (2018) “Statistical paradises and paradoxes in big data (I): Law of large populations, big data paradox, and the 2016 US presidential election”, Annals of Applied Statistics 12 685.
