Beam Dynamics Studies Through Dielectric THz Accelerating Structures / Apsimon, Robert (Lancaster U. (main)) ; Appleby, Robert (U. Manchester (main)) ; Burt, Graeme (Lancaster U. (main)) ; Healy, Alisa (Lancaster U. (main)) ; Jamison, Steven (Lancaster U. (main)) ; Latina, Andrea (CERN) ; Smith, Elliott (U. Manchester (main))
As conventional RF accelerating schemes approach the physical limit of accelerating gradient, the accelerator community is increasingly looking at novel accelerating techniques to overcome these limitations. Moving from the RF to the THz frequency range, higher acceleration gradients of high energy beams can be achieved in compact structures. [...]

ProTec - A Normal-conducting Cyclinac for Proton Therapy Research and Radioisotope Production / Apsimon, Robert (Lancaster U.) ; Burt, Graeme (Lancaster U.) ; Degiovanni, Alberto (CERN) ; Mitchell, James (Lancaster U.) ; Owen, Hywel (U. Manchester (main)) ; Pitman, Sam (Lancaster U.)
The ProTec cyclinac proposes the use of a 24 MeV high-current cyclotron to inject protons into a normal-conducting linac pulsed at up to 1 kHz to give energies up to 150 MeV. As well as being able to produce radioisotopes such as 99mTc, the cyclinac can also provide protons at higher energy with beam properties relevant for proton therapy research. [...]

S-band booster design and emittance preservation for the Awake $e^-$ injector / Mete Apsimon, Oznur (Lancaster U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Manchester (main) ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.)
AWAKE is a proton driven plasma wakefield acceleration experiment at CERN which uses the protons from the SPS. It aims to study the self modulation instability of a proton bunch and the acceleration of an externally injected electron beam in the plasma wakefields, during the so called Phase II until the technical stop of LHC and its injector chain (LS2) in 2019. Electron Beam Based Leather Tanning / Apsimon, Robert (Lancaster U. (main) ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Dewhurst, Kay (Lancaster U. (main) ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tanning of leather for clothing, shoes, and handbags uses potentially harmful chemicals that often run off into local water supplies or require a large carbon footprint to safely recover these pollutants. In regions of the world with significant leather production, this can lead to a significant environmental impact. [...]

Modeling the Low Level RF Response on the Beam during Crab Cavity Quench / Apsimon, Robert (Lancaster U.) ; Appleby, Robert (U. Manchester (main)) ; Baudrenghien, Philippe (CERN) ; Burt, Graeme (Lancaster U.) ; Dexter, Amos (Lancaster U.) ; Sjobak, Kyrre (CERN)
The High Luminosity Upgrade for the LHC (HL-LHC) relies on crab cavities to compensate for the luminosity reduction due to the crossing angle of the colliding bunches at the interaction points. In this paper we present the simulation studies of cavity quenches and the impact on the beam. [...]

Proton beam therapy is an alternative to traditional x-ray radiotherapy utilised especially for paediatric malignancies and radio-resistant tumours; it allows a precise tumour irradiation, but is currently limited by knowledge of the patient density and thus the particle range [1]. Typically X-ray computed tomography (CT) is used for treatment planning but CT scans require conversion from Hounsfield units to estimate the proton stopping power (PSP), which has limited accuracy .
