Characterization of the longitudinal beam coupling impedance and mitigation strategy for the fast extraction kicker KFA79 in the CERN PS
/ Neroni, M (CERN ; U. Rome La Sapienza (main)) ; Barnes, M (CERN) ; Ducimetiere, L (CERN) ; Lasheen, A (CERN) ; Mostacci, A (U. Rome La Sapienza (main)) ; Popovic, B (Argonne) ; Trubacova, P (CERN) ; Vollinger, C (CERN)
In the framework of the High Luminosity Upgrade of the LHC (HL-LHC) the beam intensity from the injectors must be doubled while keeping longitudinal beam parameters unchanged. As such, high-quality beams with high intensities are required also from the Proton Synchrotron (PS). [...]

Beam Coupling Impedance of the Main Extraction Kickers in the CERN PS
/ Neroni, Michela (CERN ; U. Rome La Sapienza (main)) ; Barnes, Michael (CERN) ; Lasheen, Alexandre (CERN) ; Mostacci, Andrea (U. Rome La Sapienza (main)) ; Popovic, Branko (Argonne) ; Vollinger, Christine (CERN)
In view of the High Luminosity (HL) upgrade of the LHC, the beam intensity must be doubled in the injector chain. To perform reliable beam dynamics simulations, the beam coupling impedance in the injectors, such as the Proton Synchrotron (PS), must be followed closely by including all contributing elements into the impedance model. Beam-induced heating mitigation of the SPS kickers: a crucial upgrade to move towards HL-LHC beam intensities
/ Zannini, C (CERN) ; Barnes, M (CERN) ; Diaz, M (CERN) ; Ducimetière, L (CERN) ; Standen, D (CERN) ; Rumolo, G (CERN) ; Trubacova, P (CERN)
Beam-induced heating of equipment can have several undesirable effects, including rendering the equipment temporarily inoperative, equipment degradation and/or damage. Hence, to avoid these problems, it can be necessary to limit beam intensity. [...]

Mitigation of High Voltage Breakdown of the Beam Screen of a CERN SPS Injection Kicker Magnet
/ Barnes, Michael (CERN) ; Bartmann, Wolfgang (CERN) ; Díaz Zumel, Miguel (CERN) ; Ducimetière, Laurent (CERN) ; Feliciano, Luis (CERN) ; Kramer, Thomas (CERN) ; Namora, Vasco (CERN) ; Stadlbauer, Tobias (CERN) ; Standen, Dylan (CERN) ; Trubacova, Pavlina (CERN) et al.
The SPS injection kicker magnets (MKP) were developed in the 1970’s, before beam induced power deposition was considered an issue. These magnets are very lossy from a beam impedance perspective: this is expected to be an issue during SPS operation with the higher intensity beams needed for HL-LHC. [...]

MKP-L Impedance Mitigation and Expectations for MKP-S in the CERN-SPS

Beam coupling impedance mitigation is key in preventing intensity limitations due to beam stability issues, heating and sparking. In this framework, a very good example is the optimization of the SPS kickers beam-coupling impedance for beam-induced heating mitigation. [...]

Recent updates in the impedance characterization of the CERN PS Booster Finemet RF system

During the last long shutdown of the accelerators at CERN (LS2), the main radio frequency system of the Proton Synchrotron Booster (PSB) was upgraded. A widebandsystem with Finemet magnetic alloy cavities driven by solid-state amplifiers replaced several different ferrite-loaded cavities. [...]

Longitudinal Microwave Instability Study at Transition Crossing with Ion Beams in the CERN PS
/ Lasheen, Alexandre (CERN) ; Damerau, Heiko (CERN) ; Huschauer, Alexander (CERN) ; Popovic, Branko (CERN)
The luminosity of lead ion collisions in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) was significantly increased during the 2018 ion run by reducing the bunch spacing from 100 ns to 75 ns, allowing to increase the total number of bunches. With the new 75 ns variant, three instead of four bunches are generated each cycle in the Low Energy Ion Ring (LEIR) and the Proton Synchrotron (PS) with up to 30% larger intensity per bunch. [...]

New pulse forming line and transmission cables for the CERN PS booster extraction and transfer kickers
/ Kramer, Thomas (CERN) ; del Barrio Montañés, Alicia (CERN) ; Ducimetière, Laurent (CERN) ; Trubacova, Pavlina (CERN) ; Stadlbauer, Tobias (CERN)
The CERN PS booster features four extraction kicker systems, one for each of the four superposed rings and three transfer kicker systems for recombination of the beams when being transferred towards the PS. Each of these systems consist of SF6 gas filled Pulse Forming Lines (PFL) which are resonantly charged and then fast discharged by thyratron switches into SF6 gas filled transmission cables, transferring the pulse to the magnets.
