Positron Emission Tomography: Can crystals used in particle detectors save lives? / Bressan, Beatrice (Universita e INFN, Bologna (IT)) ; Foka, Yiota (GSI - Helmholtzzentrum fur Schwerionenforschung GmbH (DE)) ; Bruant Gulejova, Barbora (Universitaet Bern (CH)) ; Hatzifotiadou, Despina (Universita e INFN, Bologna (IT))
The Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is explained as a medical imaging technique widely used in hospitals to detect anomalies in the body of patients (like cancer tumors) on a daily basis. The article explains how PET works and how knowledge of basic physics processes is used to visualize the physiological processes in biological systems [...]

Memorandum of Understanding Establishing The International Particle Physics Outreach Group (IPPOG) Collaboration / Beck, Hans Peter (Universitaet Bern (CH)) ; Bardeen, Marjorie (FNAL) ; Bruant Gulejova, Barbora (Universitaet Bern (CH))
IPPOG is a network of scientists, researchers, science educators, explainers and communication specialists active across the globe in outreach for particle physics; IPPOG’s mission is to maximise the impact of education and outreach efforts related to particle physics; The European Strategy for Particle Physics, as adopted and updated regularly by the CERN Council, acknowledges the important role played by IPPOG in the promotion of particle physics; The IPPOG stakeholders recognise the need to create a formal legal structure permitting IPPOG to increase the scope and quality of its work; This Memorandum of Understanding (the “MoU”) creates the IPPOG Collaboration and sets out its governance and the rights and obligations of participants..

Comparison of 352 MHZ Linac structures for injection into an ion therapy accelerator / Nikitovic, Lazar (Riga Technical University (LV)) ; Torims, Toms (Riga Technical University (LV)) ; Vretenar, Maurizio (CERN)
In the frame of ongoing initiatives for the design of a new generation of synchrotron-based accelerators for can-cer therapy with ion beams, an analysis of linac designs has been started, to address a critical element with a strong im-pact on the performance and cost of the accelerator. The goal is to identify alternatives at lower cost and a similar or possibly smaller footprint than the standard 217 MHz in-jector presently used in all carbon therapy facilities in Eu-rope. [...]

Impact of science on society and sustainable development showcased by particle physics and CERN / Bruant Gulejova, Barbora (Universitaet Bern (CH))
This presentation provides an overview of the broad positive impact of science on society and sustainable development, using CERN as a main example. As scientific community faces threatened funding of large experimental endeavors and low interest of young generation to engage in studies of physics and related sciences (refered to as "STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) crisis"), the justification of basic research has become more important than ever [...]
