The CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) aims at providing stable proton spills of several seconds to the North Area (NA) fixed target experiments via third-integer resonant slow extraction. However, low-frequency power converter ripple (primarily at 50 and 100 Hz) and high-frequency structures (mainly at harmonics of the revolution frequency) modulate the extracted intensity, which can compromise the performance of the data acquisition systems of the NA experiments. Empty-bucket techniques for spill-quality improvement at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron

Synchrotrons can provide long spills of particles by employing resonant extraction where the circulating beam is slowly ejected over thousands to millions of turns by exploiting the amplitude growth caused by a transverse resonance. In the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS), this method is used to satisfy the experimental requests of the North Area. [...]

Implementation of RF Channeling at the CERN PS for Spill Quality Improvements
/ Arrutia Sota, Pablo Andreas (CERN) ; Burrows, Philip (JAI, UK) ; Damerau, Heiko (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Vadai, Mihaly (CERN) ; Velotti, Francesco (CERN)
Resonant slow extraction from synchrotrons aims at providing constant intensity spills over timescales much longer than the revolution period of the machine. However, the extracted intensity is undesirably modulated by noise on the machine’s power converters with a frequency range of between 50 Hz and a few kHz. [...]

SPS fixed target spill quality improvements in the longitudinal plane
/ Papotti, Giulia (CERN) ; Spierer, Arthur (CERN) ; Quartullo, Danilo (CERN) ; Hagmann, Gregoire (CERN) ; Karpov, Ivan (CERN) ; Piandani, Roberto (San Luis Potosi U.)
The SPS proton fixed target beams are spilled via a third integer resonant extraction, for which high momentum spread is beneficial. To increase the momentum spread prior to the slow extraction, the bunches are stretched at the unstable phase by inverting the sign of the RF voltage. [...]

The main SPS users are the experiments installed in North experimental Area (NA) which are served with a continuous 4.8 s long spill of protons and heavy ions. A third-integer resonant slow extraction is used to provide a uniform, long spill. [...]

Implementation of a Tune Sweep Slow Extraction with Constant Optics at MedAustron
/ Arrutia Sota, Pablo Andreas (CERN) ; Burrows, Philip (JAI, UK) ; De Franco, Andrea (QST, Rokkasho Fusion Inst.) ; Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Kuehteubl, Florian (EBG MedAustron) ; Pivi, Mauro (MedAustron) ; Prokopovich, Dale (MedAustron) ; Velotti, Francesco (CERN)
Conventional slow extraction driven by a tune sweep perturbs the optics and changes the presentation of the beam separatrix to the extraction septum during the spill. The constant optics slow extraction (COSE) technique, recently developed and deployed operationally at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron to reduce beam loss on the extraction septum, was implemented at MedAustron to facilitate extraction with a tune sweep of operational beam quality. Optimisation of a High-Resolution, Low-Latency Stripline Beam Position Monitor System for Use in Intra-Train Feedback

A high-resolution, low-latency beam position monitor (BPM) system has been developed for use in feedback systems at particle accelerators and beamlines that operate with trains of particle bunches with bunch separations as low as several tens of nanoseconds, such as future linear electron-positron colliders and free-electron lasers. The system was tested with electron beams in the extraction line of the Accelerator Test Facility at the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK) in Japan. [...]

Slow extracted spill ripple control in the CERN SPS using adaptive Bayesian optimisation

The CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) offers slow-extracted, high-intensity proton beams at 400 GeV/c for 3 fixed targets in the CERN North Experimental Area (NA) with a spill length of about 5 seconds. Since first commissioning in the late seventies, the NA has seen a steady increase in users, many of which requiring improved spill quality control. [...]
