As part of the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) project strategy, crab cavity correctors shall be installed around CMS and ATLAS experiments of the LHC. To accommodate the different crossing angle planes, two distinct cavity designs have been selected: the RF Dipole (RFD) and the Double Quarter Wave resonator (DQW). [...]

Status of the HL-LHC Crab Cavity Tuner / Artoos, Kurt (CERN) ; Arnaudon, Luca (CERN) ; Calaga, Rama (CERN) ; Cano-Pleite, Eduardo (CERN) ; Capatina, Ofelia (CERN) ; Capelli, Teddy (CERN) ; Cartaxo dos Santos, Duarte (CERN) ; Garlasché, Marco (CERN) ; Glenat, David (CERN) ; Krawczyk, Artur (Cracow, INP ; CERN) et al.
The resonance frequency of the HL-LHC Double Quarter Wave (DQW) and Radio Frequency Dipole (RFD) crab cavities is set to the operating frequency of 400.79 MHz by deforming the cavities. For both types of cavities, the tuning principle foresees a symmetric mechanical deformation of parts of the cavities in vertical direction, with the tuner motor placed outside on top of the vacuum vessel. A cryomodule with two Double-Quarter Wave (DQW) cavities was designed, built and tested with the SPS beam in 2018. Each cavity was equipped with an rf pickup antenna to monitor field amplitude and phase. [...]

Luminosity Reduction Caused by the Full-Detuning LLRF Scheme on the HL-LHC Crab Cavities / Yamakawa, Emi (Lancaster U.) ; Apsimon, Robert (Lancaster U.) ; Baudrenghien, Philippe (CERN) ; Calaga, Rama (CERN) ; Dexter, Amos (Lancaster U.) ; Galindo Guarch, Francisco Javier (CERN)
The High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) crab cavities (CCs) will be installed on both sides of IP1 (ATLAS) and IP5 (CMS) to compensate for the geometric luminosity reduction due to the crossing angle. To cope with the increased beam current (0.55 A DC for LHC, 1.1 A for HL-LHC), the operation of the LLRF system has been changed: rather than fully compensating the transient beam loading, we allow the phase to vary along the turn (100 ps peak-peak with 1.1 A DC). Optimizing the Manufacture of High-Purity Niobium SRF Cavities Using the Forming Limit Diagram: A Case Study of the HL-LHC Crab Cavities RFD Pole / Gallifa Terricabras, Adrià (CERN) ; Aviles Santillana, Ignacio (CERN) ; Barrière, Simon (CERN) ; Cano-Pleite, Eduardo (Carlos III U., Madrid) ; Garlasché, Marco (CERN) ; Narduzzi, Manuele (Fermilab) ; Pfeiffer, Stephan (CERN) ; Prever-Loiri, Laurent (CERN) ; Swieszek, Joanna (CERN ; U. Heidelberg (main))
The Crab Cavities are key components of the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) project at CERN, which aims to increase the integrated luminosity of the LHC, the world’s largest particle accelerator, by a factor of ten. This paper explores the application of the Forming Limit Diagram (FLD) to enhance the manufacturing process of complex-shape Nb-based cavities, with a focus on the formability challenges experienced with the pole of the Radio Frequency Dipole (RFD) Crab Cavities.
