Electrostatic dust lofting: a possible cause for beam losses at CERN’s LHC / Elliott, A (Florida Inst. Tech.) ; Wang, X (U. Colorado, Boulder) ; Horanyi, M (U. Colorado, Boulder) ; Taylor, K (U. Colorado, Boulder) ; Schmidt, R (Darmstadt, Tech. Hochsch.) ; Wiesner, C (CERN) ; Wollmann, D (CERN) ; Belanger, P (TRIUMF)
Dust particles interacting with the proton beams have caused many thousand beam-loss events at CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC), some of which led to premature beam dumps and even magnet quenches. It has been hypothesized that dust particles on the vacuum chamber wall of the LHC are negatively charged due to electron clouds and can detach from the chamber wall by the electric field of the beam. Photoelectric charging and lofting of dust particles on a conducting surface with external electric fields / Taylor, Kelyan (U. Colorado, Boulder) ; Elliott, Amanda (Rochester U.) ; Wang, Xu (U. Colorado, Boulder) ; Horanyi, Mihaly (U. Colorado, Boulder) ; Schmidt, Rudiger (Darmstadt, Tech. U.) ; Wollmann, Daniel (CERN) ; Wiesner, Christoph (CERN) ; Belanger, Philippe (TRIUMF)
We present a laboratory study of photoelectric charging of dust particles and their lofting on a conducting surface in the presence of external electric fields. Insulating particles with diameter <45 μm are dispersed on a conducting surface exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light. [...]

System Relation Management and Status Tracking for CERN Accelerator Systems / Garnier, J C (CERN) ; Audrain, M (CERN) ; Csikos, D (CERN) ; Fuchsberger, K (CERN) ; Gorzawski, A A (CERN) ; Horanyi, G (CERN) ; Suchowski, J (CERN) ; Turcu, P C (CERN) ; Zerlauth, M (CERN)
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN requires many systems to work together closely to allow reliable operation and at the same time ensure that the required protection systems function correctly when operating with the large energies stored in the magnet system and particle beams..

The Forward TPC system of the NA61/SHINE experiment at CERN: a tandem TPC concept / Rumberger, Brant (U. Colorado, Boulder) ; Aduszkiewicz, Antoni (Warsaw U.) ; Boissevain, Jan (U. This paper presents the Forward Time Projection Chamber (FTPC) system of the NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN SPS accelerator. This TPC system applies a novel tandem-TPC design to reduce the background originating from particle tracks not synchronous with the event trigger. [...]

A new, low-energy beamline branch is currently under consideration for the H₂ beamline at the CERN North Area. This new branch would extend the capabilities of the current infrastructure enabling the study of particles in the very low, 1-13 GeV/c, momentum range. [...]

This paper presents the design on the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) of an experimental set-up to meas-ure incoherent Diffraction Cherenkov Radiation (DChR) produced in a 2 cm long SiO2 radiator by a 2.1 GeV elec-tron beam. The electron beam is circulating at a distance of few mm from the edge of the radiator and the DChR photon output power is expected to be significantly higher than the diffraction radiation power emitted from a metal-lic slit of similar aperture. Could "Flakes" of Neutral Paramagnetic or Dipolar Molecules Explain Beam Losses in the LHC? / Franchetti, Giuliano (Darmstadt, GSI ; Frankfurt U., FIAS) ; Zimmermann, Frank (CERN)
"Flakes" of neutral water or oxygen molecules carrying an electric or magnetic dipole moment can be attracted and trapped by the electromagnetic field of the circulating LHC proton beam. The possible presence of such flakes in the vacuum system could explain beam losses and beam instabilities encountered during the 2017 and 2018 LHC runs, and the observed effect of an external magnetic field..
