Radiation levels from a beam gas curtain instrument at the LHC at CERN / Prelipcean, Daniel (CERN) ; Sequeiro, Cristina (CERN) ; Schneider, Gerhard (CERN) ; Lerner, Giuseppe (CERN) ; Ady, Marton (CERN) ; Sedlacek, Ondrej (CERN) ; Veness, Raymond (CERN) ; Garcia Alia, Ruben (CERN)
A prototype Beam Gas Curtain (BGC) monitor was installed at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN to provide 2D images of the transverse beam profile during the ongoing Run 3 (2022 to date) and in view of the High Luminosity LHC upgrade (HL-LHC). By design, the BGC operation generates collisions between the beam particles and an injected gas jet proportionally to the beam intensity and the gas density, possibly causing radiation-induced issues to the downstream LHC equipment. Beam gas curtain monitor: Vacuum studies for LHC integration and operation / Castro Sequeiro, C (CERN) ; Ady, M (CERN) ; Bregliozzi, G (CERN) ; Chatzigeorgiou, N (CERN) ; Churchman, A R (CERN) ; Kersevan, R (CERN) ; Lefevre, T (CERN) ; Mazzoni, S (CERN) ; Pigny, G (CERN) ; Rossi, A (CERN) et al.
A beam gas curtain (BGC) monitor has been designed to obtain information about the relative position between the LHC proton beam and the hollow electron lens electron beam through a minimally invasive process. Its working principle relies on intersecting the path of both beams with a supersonic gas curtain, introduced transversely into the LHC beamline, to produce a fluorescence signal. [...]

Radiation levels produced by the operation of the Beam Gas Vertex monitor in the LHC tunnel at IR4 / Prelipcean, D (CERN) ; Lerner, G (CERN) ; García Alía, R (CERN) ; Bilko, K (CERN) ; Kolbinger, B (CERN) ; Guerin, H (CERN) ; Storey, J (CERN) ; Galloro, A (CERN) ; Kersevan, R (CERN)
The Large Hadron Collider at CERN is equipped with instruments that exploit collisions between beam particles and gas targets, one of them being the Beam Gas Vertex monitor. By design, its operation generates secondary particle showers used to measure beam properties, that also result in radiation levels in the tunnel proportional to the beam intensity and gas pressure. HL-LHC Beam Gas Fluorescence Studies for Transverse Profile Measurement / Sedláček, Ondrej (CERN ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech. ; U. Accel. Sci. Tech. ; U. Liverpool (main)) et al.
In a gas jet monitor, a supersonic gas curtain is injected into the beam pipe and interacts with the charged particle beam. The monitor exploits fluorescence induced by beam-gas interactions, thus providing a minimally invasive transverse profile measurement. [...]

The Beam-Gas Curtain or BGC is the baseline instrument for monitoring the concentricity of the LHC proton beam with a hollow electron beam for the hollow e-lens (HEL) beam halo suppression device which is part of the High-Luminosity LHC upgrade. The proof-of-principles experiments of this gas-jet monitor have now been developed into a prototype instrument which has been built for integration into the LHC ring and is now under phased installation for operation in the upcoming LHC run. A beam profile monitor using gas jet technology is being designed and manufactured at the Cockcroft Institute for high intensity electron beams. It generates a thin, supersonic gas sheet that traverses the beam at a 45-degree orientation and measures the beam-induced fluorescence interactions to produce a 2D beam profile image. [...]

A non-invasive bidirectional beam profile monitor using beam-induced fluorescence upon a thin sheet of gas has been developed at the Cockcroft Institute in collaboration with CERN and GSI. This device is particularly suited to the Electron Beam Test Stand, and as such, a bespoke gas injection has been optimized for this specific use-case to provide diagnostics unavailable to conventional scintillator screens.
