Perspectives for quarkonium studies at the high-luminosity LHC / Chapon, Emilien (Beijing, Inst. High Energy Phys.) ; d'Enterria, David (CERN) ; Ducloue, Bertrand (Edinburgh U. ; U. Edinburgh, Higgs Ctr. Theor. Phys.) ; Echevarria, Miguel G. (Alcala de Henares U.) ; Gossiaux, Pol-Bernard (SUBATECH, Nantes) ; Kartvelishvili, Vato (Lancaster U.) ; Kasemets, Tomas (U. Mainz, PRISMA) ; Lansberg, Jean-Philippe (IJCLab, Orsay) ; McNulty, Ronan (University Coll., Dublin) ; Price, Darren D. (Manchester U.) et al.
We review the prospects for quarkonium-production studies in proton and nuclear collisions accessible during the upcoming phases of the CERN Large Hadron Collider operation after 2021, including the ultimate high-luminosity phase, with increased luminosities compared to LHC Runs 1 and 2. We address the current experimental and theoretical open issues in the field and the perspectives for future studies in quarkonium-related physics through the exploitation of the huge data samples to be collected in proton-proton, with integrated luminosities reaching up to 3/ab, in proton-nucleus and in nucleus-nucleus collisions, both in the collider and fixed-target modes. ALICE results on quarkonium production in pp, p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions / Bruno, Giuseppe Eugenio (Bari U. ; INFN, Bari) /ALICE Collaboration
The study of quarkonia, bound states of heavy (charm or bottom) quark-antiquark pairs such as the J/psi or the Upsilon?, provides insight into the earliest and hottest stages of high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions where the formation of a Quark-Gluon Plasma is expected. High-precision data from proton-proton collisions represent an essential baseline for the measurement of nuclear modi?cations in nucleus-nucleus collisions and serve also as a crucial test for models of quarkonium hadroproduction. Vector boson and quarkonia production in p+Pb and Pb+Pb collisions with ATLAS at the LHC / Gallus, Petr (Czech Technical University in Prague) /ATLAS Collaboration
Photons and weak bosons do not interact strongly with the dense and hot medium formed in the nuclear collisions, thus should be sensitive to the nuclear modification of parton distribution functions (nPDFs). The in-medium modification of heavy quarkonium states plays an important role in studying the hot and dense medium formed in the larger collision systems. [...]

Study of Cold Nuclear Matter Effects on Heavy Quarkonia in Proton-Lead Collisions at LHCb / Jing, Fanfan
Proton-nucleus ($p\rm{A}$) collisions play an important role in high energy nuclear physics as they allow to study nuclear matter effects and the parton distribution functions in the nuclear environment (nPDF) [...]

Quarkonium Production Measurements with the ALICE Detector at the LHC / Fionda, F (Bergen U.) /ALICE Collaboration
In (ultra-)relativistic heavy-ion collisions, the strongly interactingmatter is predicted to undergo a phase transition into a plasma of deconfinedquarks and gluons (QGP) and quarkonia probe different aspects of this medium. However, the medium modification of quarkonium production includes also the contribution of cold nuclear matter effects (CNM), such as shadowing or nuclear break-up in addition to QGP effects. Proton--nucleus collisions, where no QGP is expected, are used to measure cold nuclear matter effects on quarkonium production. [...]

Quarkonium measurements at forward rapidity with ALICE at the LHC / Shaikh, Wadut (Saha Inst.) /ALICE Collaboration
Heavy quarks are produced at the first instant of a nucleus--nucleus collision and therefore are an important tool to study the subsequent high energy-density medium formed in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. A series of experimental efforts for understanding the properties of the Quark--Gluon Plasma (QGP), a medium consisting of a deconfined state of quarks and gluons, are based on measuring the bound states of heavy quark--anti-quark pairs known as quarkonia. Bayesian reweighting of nuclear PDFs and constraints from proton-lead collisions at the LHC / Armesto, Nestor (Santiago de Compostela U., IGFAE ; CERN) ; Rojo, Juan (CERN) ; Salgado, Carlos A. (Santiago de Compostela U., IGFAE) ; Zurita, Pia (Santiago de Compostela U., IGFAE)
New hard-scattering measurements from the LHC proton-lead run have the potential to provide important constraints on the nuclear parton distributions and thus contributing to a better understanding of the initial state in heavy ion collisions. In order to quantify these constraints, as well as to assess the compatibility with available nuclear data from fixed target experiments and from RHIC, the traditional strategy is to perform a global fit of nuclear PDFs.
