In June 1998, an experiment in which a large lead target was irradiated by a beam of relativistic protons, was performed on the proton-synchrotron accelerator at the Joint Institute of Nuclear Research as part of the project, "Simulation of the electronuclear method for producing energy and the study of the transmutation of radioactive waste in beams of proton-synchrotron accelerator /nuclotron at the Joint Institute of Nuclear Research".
