First Experiences with the PITZ Plasma Cell for Electron Beam Self-modulation Studies / Groß, Matthias (DESY, Zeuthen) ; Donat, Alexander (DESY, Zeuthen) ; Good, James (DESY, Zeuthen) ; Khojoyan, Martin (DESY, Zeuthen) ; Koss, Gerald (DESY, Zeuthen) ; Krasilnikov, Mikhail (DESY, Zeuthen) ; Schütze, Rico (DESY, Zeuthen) ; Stephan, Frank (DESY, Zeuthen) ; Vashchenko, Grygorii (DESY, Zeuthen) ; Brinkmann, Reinhard (DESY) et al.
The self-modulation of long particle beams in a plasma has recently gained interest in light of the ongoing preparation for the plasma wakefield acceleration experiment of the AWAKE collaboration at CERN. Instrumental to the experiment is the self-modulation of a proton beam to generate bunches short enough for producing high acceleration fields. [...]

Characterization of Self-Modulated Electron Bunches in an Argon Plasma / Groß, Matthias (DESY, Zeuthen) ; Boonpornprasert, Prach (DESY, Zeuthen) ; Brinkmann, Reinhard (DESY) ; Chen, Ye (DESY, Zeuthen) ; Engel, Johannes (DESY, Zeuthen) ; Good, James (DESY, Zeuthen) ; Grüner, Florian (CFEL, Hamburg ; Hamburg U.) ; Huck, Holger (DESY, Zeuthen) ; Isaev, Igor (DESY, Zeuthen) ; Krasilnikov, Mikhail (DESY, Zeuthen) et al.
The self-modulation instability is fundamental for the plasma wakefield acceleration experiment of the AWAKE (Advanced Wakefield Experiment) collaboration at CERN where this effect is used to generate proton bunches for the resonant excitation of high acceleration fields. Utilizing the availability of flexible electron beam shaping together with excellent diagnostics including an RF deflector, a supporting experiment was set up at the electron accelerator PITZ (Photo Injector Test facility at DESY, Zeuthen site), given that the underlying physics is the same. Loading of Wakefields in a Plasma Accelerator Section Driven by a Self-Modulated Proton Beam / Berglyd Olsen, Veronica (U. Oslo (main)) ; Adli, Erik (U. Oslo (main)) ; Muggli, Patric (Munich, Max Planck Inst. ; CERN) ; Vieira, Jorge (Lisbon, IST)
Using parameters from the AWAKE project and particle-in-cell simulations we investigate beam loading of a plasma wake driven by a self-modulated proton beam. Addressing the case of injection of an electron witness bunch after the drive beam has already experienced self-modulation in a previous plasma, we optimise witness bunch parameters of size, charge and injection phase to maximise energy gain and minimise relative energy spread and emittance of the accelerated bunch..

Self-modulation instability of a long proton bunch in plasmas / Kumar, Naveen (Heinrich Heine U., Dusseldorf) ; Pukhov, Alexander (Heinrich Heine U., Dusseldorf) ; Lotov, Konstantin (Novosibirsk, IYF ; Novosibirsk State U.)
An analytical model for the self-modulation instability of a long relativistic proton bunch propagating in uniform plasmas is developed. The self-modulated proton bunch resonantly excites a large amplitude plasma wave (wake field), which can be used for acceleration of plasma electrons. [...]

Comparison of Fourier Signal and Error Analysis Techniques for Identifying the Self-Modulation Frequency of a Proton Bunch / Gessner, Spencer (CERN)
The AWAKE experiment uses an ultra-high energy proton beam to create large amplitude wakefields for accelerating electrons in plasma. The proton beam is much longer than the plasma wavelength, and must be formed into small, sub- wavelength sized beamlets before it can effectively drive the wake. [...]

Design of the Proton and Electron Transfer Lines for AWAKE Run 2c / Ramjiawan, Rebecca (JAI, UK ; CERN) ; Döbert, Steffen (CERN) ; Farmer, John (Munich, Max Planck Inst. ; CERN) ; Gschwendtner, Edda (CERN) ; Muggli, Patric (Munich, Max Planck Inst. ; CERN) ; Velotti, Francesco (CERN) ; Verra, Livio (CERN)
The AWAKE Run 1 experiment achieved electron acceleration to 2 GeV using plasma wakefield acceleration driven by 400 GeV, self-modulated proton bunches from the CERN SPS. The Run 2c phase of the experiment aims to build on these results by demonstrating acceleration to ~10 GeV while preserving the quality of the accelerated electron beam. [...]

Beam Diagnostics in the Advanced Plasma Wakefield Experiment AWAKE / Bachmann, Anna-Maria (Munich, Max Planck Inst. ; Munich, Tech. U. ; CERN) ; Muggli, Patric (Munich, Max Planck Inst.)
In AWAKE a self-modulated proton bunch drives wakefields in a plasma. Recent experiments successfully demonstrated many aspects of the self-modulation of the drive bunch as well as acceleration of test electrons. [...]

Preparation for Electron-Seeding of Proton Bunch Self-Modulation in AWAKE / Zevi Della Porta, Giovanni (CERN) ; Gschwendtner, Edda (CERN) ; Moon, Kookjin (UNIST, Ulsan) ; Muggli, Patric (Munich, Max Planck Inst.) ; Verra, Livio (CERN ; Munich, Max Planck Inst.)
The next milestone of the Advanced Wakefield Experiment (AWAKE) at CERN will be to demonstrate that the self-modulation of a long proton bunch can be seeded by a short electron bunch preceding it. This seeding method will lead to phase-reproducible self-modulation of the entire proton bunch, as required for the future AWAKE program. [...]

The AWAKE Experiment in 2021: Performance and Preliminary Results on Electron-Seeding of Self-Modulation / Gschwendtner, Edda (CERN) ; Muggli, Patric (Munich, Max Planck Inst.) ; Verra, Livio (CERN) ; Zevi Della Porta, Giovanni (CERN) /AWAKE Collaboration
The future programme of the Advanced Wakefield (AWAKE) experiment at CERN relies on the seeded self-modulation of an entire proton bunch, resulting in phase-reproducible micro-bunches. This important milestone was achieved during the 2021 proton run by injecting a short electron bunch ahead of the proton bunch, demonstrating for the first time the electron-seeding of proton bunch self-modulation [...]

Status and Prospects for the AWAKE Experiment / Turner, Marlene (CERN) /AWAKE Collaboration
The AWAKE Collaboration is pursuing a demonstration of proton-driven plasma wakefield acceleration of electrons. The AWAKE experiment uses a \SI{400}{GeV/c} proton bunch from the CERN SPS, with a rms bunch length of $6$-\SI{15}{cm}, to drive wakefields in a \SI{10}{m} long rubidium plasma with an electron density of $10^{14}-10^{15}$cm$^{-3}$.
