Advanced simulation techniques for Radiation Protection studies at the Large Hadron Collider / Bozzato, Davide (CERN) ; Dyrcz, Patrycja (CERN) ; Froeschl, Robert (CERN) ; Infantino, Angelo (CERN) ; Lorenzon, Tommaso (CERN) ; Tisi, Marco (CERN) ; Vincke, Heinz (CERN)
The paper provides an overview of the radiation protection challenges and the advanced simulation techniques used to study and plan complex interventions in radiation areas at CERN, particularly with regard to the Large Hadron Collider. The operational radiation protection aspects are supported by state of the art simulations by means of the FLUKA Monte Carlo code and estimates obtained via several tools, used within the CERN Radiation Protection group, such as ActiWiz, SESAME, and the Fluence Conversion Coefficients (FCC) method which extend the built-in FLUKA capabilities. Radiological Characterization Studies for the CNGS Dismantling / Ahdida, Claudia (CERN) ; Nowak, Elzbieta (CERN) ; Saury, Christelle (CERN) ; Vincke, Heinz (CERN) ; Vincke, Helmut (CERN)
A comprehensive study of the radiological CNGS (CERN Neutrinos to Gran Sasso Experiment) environment characterization is presented. It comprises the evaluation of the residual dose rates of the most relevant standalone beam line equipment, such as the target and horn, as well as overall dose levels in the cavern before and after dismantling. Measurement and simulations of high-energy neutrons through a various thickness of concrete and steel shields using activation detectors at CHARM and CSBF / Nakao, Noriaki (Tokyo Inst. Tech.) ; Sanami, Toshiya (KEK, Tsukuba) ; Kajimoto, Tsuyoshi (Hiroshima U.) ; Yashima, Hiroshi (Kyoto Sangyo U.) ; Froeschl, Robert (CERN) ; Bozzato, Davide (CERN) ; Iliopoulou, Elpida (CERN) ; Infantino, Angelo (CERN) ; Lee, Eunji (Kyushu U.) ; Oyama, Takahiro (KEK, Tsukuba) et al.
A shielding experiment using activation detectors was performed at the CERN High-energy AcceleRator Mixed-field (CHARM) facility and the CERN Shielding Benchmark Facility (CSBF). The protons (24 GeV/c) were bombarded into a 50-cm-thick copper target, and the released neutrons were transmitted through various shields located vertically upward from the target. [...]

In-situ radiological classification and characterization methodology of activated cables in particle accelerators / Dyrcz, Patrycja (CERN) ; Infantino, Angelo (CERN) ; Menaa, Nabil (CERN) ; El-Idrissi, Safouane (CERN) ; Tromel, Christophe (CERN) ; Vincke, Heinz (CERN)
The estimation of induced radioactivity and radiological classification of activated material is necessary throughout the life cycle of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) accelerator. As part of the upgrade to HighLuminosity LHC (HL-LHC), radiation protection assessments need to be performed in order to estimate the radiological hazard during the dismantling activities of the LHC cables. Radiological characterization for the disposal of a decommissioned LHC external beam dump at CERN / Infantino, Angelo (CERN) ; Harbron, Richard William (CERN) ; Mouret, Renaud (CERN) ; Bertreix, Philippe (CERN) ; Bernardes, Ana-Paula (CERN) ; Bruno, Luca (CERN) ; Calviani, Marco (CERN) ; Dumont, Gerald (CERN) ; El-Idrissi, Safouane (CERN) ; Magistris, Matteo (CERN) et al.
During the last Long Shutdown, a scheduled maintenance period between physics runs, the two Large Hadron Collider (LHC) beam dumps were replaced with upgraded spares modules. It was then decided to conduct an in-house autopsy and a post-irradiation examination of the removed dumps to extract information essential for the 3rd LHC physics run and to aid the design of new generations of beam dumps able to cope with future upgrades of the LHC. [...]

This paper provides an overview of the problems, challenges, and the advanced simulation techniques used to study and plan complex interventions in radiation areas at CERNs Large Hadron Collider and its future upgrade to the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider.
