Performance Improvement Studies of the Fixed Target Beams along the CERN Injector Chain / Prebibaj, Tirsi (CERN) ; Asvesta, Foteini (CERN) ; Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; Damerau, Heiko (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew Alexander (CERN) ; Di Giovanni, Gian Piero (CERN) ; Huschauer, Alexander (CERN) ; Li, Kevin Shing Bruce (CERN) ; Schenk, Michael (CERN) ; Velotti, Francesco Maria (CERN)
Within the LHC Injectors Upgrade (LIU) project, LHC injectors received major upgrades that resulted in an unprecedented beam brightness. In the framework of the Physics Beyond Colliders (PBC) study, the full potential of the upgraded injectors is being explored for the improvement of the Fixed Target (FT) beams as well. [...]

Empty-bucket techniques for spill-quality improvement at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron / Arrutia Sota, Pablo A (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew A (CERN) ; Hagmann, Gregoire (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Papotti, Giulia (CERN) ; Spierer, Arthur (CERN) ; Velotti, Francesco M (CERN) ; Burrows, Philip N (JAI, UK) ; Piandani, Roberto (San Luis Potosi U.)
Synchrotrons can provide long spills of particles by employing resonant extraction where the circulating beam is slowly ejected over thousands to millions of turns by exploiting the amplitude growth caused by a transverse resonance. In the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS), this method is used to satisfy the experimental requests of the North Area. [...]

Characterisation of the optics of the TT24 and P42 beamlines in the CERN SPS North Area / Dyks, Luke Aidan (University of Oxford (GB)) ; Banerjee, Dipanwita (CERN) ; Baratto Roldan, Anna (CERN) ; Bernhard, Johannes (CERN) ; Brugger, Markus (CERN) ; Charitonidis, Nikolaos (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew Alexander (CERN) ; Gatignon, Lau (Lancaster University (GB)) ; Goillot, Alice Marie (CERN) ; Gorn, Aleksandr (CERN) et al.
400 GeV protons extracted from the CERN SPS are transported to the T4 target via the TT20 transfer line. The P42 beamline then transports the protons that did not interact in the T4 target to the T10 target. [...]

Tailoring transverse beam characteristics with the new CERN PS Booster charge-exchange injection system / Renner, E (TU Vienna) ; Albright, S (CERN) ; Antoniou, F (CERN) ; Asvesta, F (CERN) ; Bartosik, H (CERN) ; Bracco, C (CERN) ; Di Giovanni, G P (CERN) ; Mikulec, B (CERN) ; Prebibaj, T (CERN) ; Skowronski, P (CERN) et al.
A key aspect of the LHC Injectors Upgrade project is the connection of the PSB to the newly built Linac4 and the related installation of a new 160\,MeV charge-exchange injection system. The new injection system was commissioned in winter 2020/21 and is now used operationally to tailor the transverse characteristics for the various beam types at CERN, such as high-intensity fixed target beams, LHC single bunch beams, and high-brightness beams for LHC. Design and early operation of a new-generation internal beam dump for CERN’s Super Proton Synchrotron / Francia, A. Romero (CERN) ; Perillo Marcone, A. (CERN) ; Pianese, S. (CERN) ; Andersen, K. The Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) is the last stage in the injector chain for CERN's Large Hadron Collider, and it also provides proton and ion beams for several fixed-target experiments. The SPS has been in operation since 1976, and it has been upgraded over the years. [...]

Design of a new CERN SPS injection system via numerical optimisation / Waagaard, E (CERN) ; Barnes, M J (CERN) ; Bartmann, W (CERN) ; Bencini, V (CERN) ; Borburgh, J (CERN) ; Ducimetière, L S (CERN) ; Kramer, T (CERN) ; Stadlbauer, T (CERN) ; Trubacova, P (CERN) ; Velotti, F M (CERN)
The Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) injection system plays a fundamental role to preserve the quality of injected high-brightness beams for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) physics program and to maintain the maximum storable intensity. The present system is the result of years of upgrades and patches of a system not conceived for such intensities and beam qualities. [...]

After the successful conclusion of Run1 in 2018, the AWAKE experiment is presently undergoing its second phase (Run2), which aims to demonstrate the possibility of producing high quality electron beams for high energy physics applications. Over the last year, a significant time-investment was made to study proton beam centroid modulation effects in plasma induced by a seeding electron bunch (i.e. [...]

RF techniques for spill quality improvement in the SPS / Sota, P A Arrutia (CERN ; JAI, UK) ; Fraser, M A (CERN) ; Velotti, F M (CERN) ; Burrows, P N (JAI, UK) ; Kain, V (CERN) ; Papotti, G (CERN) ; Piandani, R (CERN ; San Luis Potosi U.) ; Roncarolo, F (CERN) ; Spierer, A (CERN) ; Vadai, M (CERN)
The CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) aims at providing stable proton spills of several seconds to the North Area (NA) fixed target experiments via third-integer resonant slow extraction. However, low-frequency power converter ripple (primarily at 50 and 100 Hz) and high-frequency structures (mainly at harmonics of the revolution frequency) modulate the extracted intensity, which can compromise the performance of the data acquisition systems of the NA experiments. [...]

The main SPS users are the experiments installed in North experimental Area (NA) which are served with a continuous 4.8 s long spill of protons and heavy ions. A third-integer resonant slow extraction is used to provide a uniform, long spill. [...]
