/ Spear, Bethany (JAI, UK) ; Pakuza, Collette (CERN) ; Senes, Eugenio (CERN) ; Wendt, Manfred (CERN) ; Burrows, Philip (JAI, UK) ; Mazzoni, Stefano (CERN) ; Lefevre, Thibaut (CERN)
A beam position monitor based on Cherenkov diffraction radiation (ChDR) is being investigated as a way to disentangle the signals generated by the electromagnetic fields of a short-pulse electron bunch from a long proton bunch co-propagating in the AWAKE plasma acceleration experiment at CERN. These ChDR BPMs have undergone renewed testing under a variety of beam conditions with proton and electron bunches in the AWAKE common beamline, at 3 different frequency ranges between 20-110 GHz to quantify the effectiveness of discriminating the electron beam position with and without proton bunches present. Application of a Camera Array for the Upgrade of the AWAKE Spectrometer
/ Senes, Eugenio (CERN) ; Cooke, David (Royal Holloway, U. of London) ; Mazzoni, Stefano (CERN) ; Pannell, Fern (Royal Holloway, U. of London) ; Turner, Marlene (CERN) ; Wing, Matthew (Royal Holloway, U. of London) ; Zevi Della Porta, Giovanni (CERN ; Lindau, Max Planck Inst.)
The first run of the AWAKE experiment successfully demonstrated the acceleration of an electron beam in the plasma wakefields of a relativistic proton beam. The planned second run will focus on the control of the emittance of accelerated electrons, requiring an upgrade of the existing spectrometer. Preliminary measurements showed that this might be achieved by improving the resolution of the scintillator and with a new design of the optical system. This contribution discusses the application of a digital camera array in close proximity of the spectrometer scintillator, to enable the accelerated electron beam emittance measurement..

Until recently, most of CERN’s beam visualisation systems have been based on increasingly obsolescent analogue cameras. Hence, there is an on-going campaign to replace old or install new digital equivalents. [...]

Electron beam studies on a beam position monitor based on Cherenkov diffraction radiation
/ Pakuza, Collette (JAI, UK) ; Malyzhenkov, Alexander (CERN) ; Schloegelhofer, Andreas (CERN) ; Aksoy, Avni (CERN) ; Spear, Bethany (JAI, UK) ; Senes, Eugenio (CERN) ; Lasocha, Kacper (CERN) ; Wendt, Manfred (CERN) ; Krupa, Michal (CERN) ; Chritin, Nicolas (CERN) et al.
A beam position monitor based on Cherenkov diffraction radiation (ChDR BPM) is currently under investigation to disentangle the electromagnetic field of an electron bunch from that of a proton bunch travelling together in time and space in the beam-line of the AWAKE plasma acceleration experiment at CERN. The signals from a horizontal pair of ChDR BPM radiators have been studied under a variety of beam conditions at the CLEAR electron beam test facility. [...]

Experimental Verification of Several Theoretical Models for ChDR Description

In recent years the potential of using Cherenkov Diffraction Radiation (ChDR) as a tool for non-invasive beam diagnostics has been thoroughly investigated. Although several theoretical models of ChDR have been developed, differences in their assumptions result in inconsistent predictions. [...]

The Advanced Proton Driven Plasma Wakefield Experiment (AWAKE) at CERN uses 6 cm long proton bunches extracted from the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) at 400 GeV beam energy to drive high gradient plasma wakefields for the acceleration of electron bunches to 2 GeV within a 10 m length. Knowledge and control of the position of both copropagating beams is crucial for the operation of the experiment. [...]

Beam Position Detection of a Short Electron Bunch in Presence of a Longer and More Intense Proton Bunch for the AWAKE Experiment

The AWAKE experiment studies the acceleration of electrons to multi-GeV levels driven by the plasma wakefield generated by an ultra-relativistic and high intensity proton bunch. The proton beam, being considerably more intense than the co-propagating electron bunch, perturbs the measurement of the electron beam position achieved via standard techniques. [...]
