We report on the development, characterization, and first application of a specialized resonance ionization laser ion source for high-resolution spectroscopy applications below usual hot cavity Doppler broadening limitations, for on-line experiments at CERN-ISOLDE. The new PI-LIST ion source comprises perpendicular laser/atom beam interaction in a radio-frequency quadrupole unit directly downstream the hot atomizer cavity. [...]

We report on high-resolution laser spectroscopy studies on Cf249–253 with spectral linewidths in the order of 100 MHz carried out at the RISIKO mass separator at Mainz University. In total three atomic ground-state transitions were investigated and the hyperfine parameters for the odd-A isotopes and isotope shift for all examined isotopes have been determined from the measured spectra. The nucleus of the radioisotope thorium-229 (${}^{229}$Th) features an isomer with an exceptionally low excitation energy that enables direct laser manipulation of nuclear states. For this reason, it is a leading candidate for use in next-generation optical clocks. [...]

Radio-frequency (RF) ion guides, also known as Linear Paul Traps, are powerful devices to efficiently transport ion beams from high to low pressure regions while keeping good ion optical properties. A set of ion guides comprising three different RF quadrupole (RFQ) structures has been designed using ion-trajectory simulations to improve the performance of the In-Gas Laser Ionizations and Spectroscopy (IGLIS) technique currently under development at KU Leuven. Atom beam emersion from hot cavity laser ion sources / Heinke, R (Mainz U.) ; Fedosseev, V (CERN) ; Kieck, T (Mainz U.) ; Kron, T (Mainz U. ; Helmholtz Inst., Mainz) ; Marsh, B (CERN) ; Raeder, S (Helmholtz Inst., Mainz ; Darmstadt, GSI) ; Richter, S (Mainz U.) ; Rothe, S (CERN) ; Wendt, K (Mainz U.)
Ion sources exploiting laser resonance ionization offer efficient and element-selective radioactive ion beam production at the leading isotope separation on-line facilities worldwide. Most commonly, laser resonance ionization takes place inside a resistively heated atomizer tube directly coupled to the production target, where the element of interest is evaporated and provided as atomic vapor. Alternative approach to populate and study the $^{229}$Th nuclear clock isomer / Verlinde, M. (Leuven U.) ; Kraemer, S. (Leuven U.) ; Moens, J. (Leuven U.) ; Chrysalidis, K. (CERN) ; Correia, J.G. A new approach to observe the radiative decay of the $^{229}$Th nuclear isomer, and to determine its energy and radiative lifetime, is presented. Situated at a uniquely low excitation energy, this nuclear state might be a key ingredient for the development of a nuclear clock, a nuclear laser and the search for time variations of the fundamental constants.
