Upgrade of the PS booster-to-ISOLDE beam transfer line to facilitate an increase in proton driver energy / Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Bernardes, Ana (CERN) ; Newborough, Antony (CERN) ; del Alamo, Daniel (CERN) ; Grenier-Boley, Edouard (CERN) ; Pozzi, Fabio (CERN) ; Di Giovanni, Gian Piero (CERN) ; Corso, Jean-Pierre (CERN) ; Vollaire, Joachim (CERN) ; Ferreira Somoza, Jose (CERN) et al.
Following the successful completion of the LHC Injectors Upgrade (LIU) project, since 2021 the Proton Synchrotron (PS) Booster has served the LHC injector chain with protons at an increased kinetic energy of 2 GeV. An upgrade of the ISOLDE (Isotope Separator On-Line DEvice) facility has long been considered to produce radioactive ion beams with a higher energy proton driver beam. [...]

Measurement and simulations of high-energy neutrons through a various thickness of concrete and steel shields using activation detectors at CHARM and CSBF / Nakao, Noriaki (Tokyo Inst. Tech.) ; Sanami, Toshiya (KEK, Tsukuba) ; Kajimoto, Tsuyoshi (Hiroshima U.) ; Yashima, Hiroshi (Kyoto Sangyo U.) ; Froeschl, Robert (CERN) ; Bozzato, Davide (CERN) ; Iliopoulou, Elpida (CERN) ; Infantino, Angelo (CERN) ; Lee, Eunji (Kyushu U.) ; Oyama, Takahiro (KEK, Tsukuba) et al.
A shielding experiment using activation detectors was performed at the CERN High-energy AcceleRator Mixed-field (CHARM) facility and the CERN Shielding Benchmark Facility (CSBF). The protons (24 GeV/c) were bombarded into a 50-cm-thick copper target, and the released neutrons were transmitted through various shields located vertically upward from the target. [...]

Evaluation and modelling of the lithium fluoride based thermoluminescent detector response at the CERN-EU high-energy reference field (CERF) / Van Hoey, Olivier (SCK-CEN, Mol) ; De Saint-Hubert, Marijke (SCK-CEN, Mol) ; Parisi, Alessio (SCK-CEN, Mol) ; Caballero-Pacheco, Miguel Ángel (Barcelona, Autonoma U.) ; Domingo, Carles (Barcelona, Autonoma U.) ; Pozzi, Fabio (CERN) ; Froeschl, Robert (CERN) ; Stolarczyk, Liliana (Aarhus U. ; Cracow, INP) ; Olko, Pawel (Cracow, INP)
Lithium fluoride (LiF) thermoluminescent detectors (TLDs) are commonly used for measurements in mixed high energy radiation fields such as space, hadron radiotherapy and other high energy accelerator facilities. However, the results of these measurements are often challenging to interpret since the radiation field compositions are not known a priori. [...]

CERN-MEDICIS: A Review Since Commissioning in 2017 / MEDICIS Collaboration
The CERN-MEDICIS (MEDical Isotopes Collected from ISolde) facility has delivered its first radioactive ion beam at CERN (Switzerland) in December 2017 to support the research and development in nuclear medicine using non-conventional radionuclides. Since then, fourteen institutes, including CERN, have joined the collaboration to drive the scientific program of this unique installation and evaluate the needs of the community to improve the research in imaging, diagnostics, radiation therapy and personalized medicine. Impact of the newly proposed ICRU/ICRP quantities on neutron calibration fields and extended range neutron rem-counters / Pozzi, Fabio (CERN) ; Ferrarini, Michele (CNAO, Milan) ; Ferrulli, Francesca (CERN ; Milan, Polytech.) ; Silari, Marco (CERN)
In July 2017, the International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements (ICRU) and the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) proposed the introduction of new operational quantities for external radiation exposure, with the aim of improving coherence between protection quantities and operational quantities within the system of radiological protection. A change in operational quantities will impact both instrumentation and reference radiation fields used for their calibration. [...]

Intercomparison of personal and ambient dosimeters in extremely high-dose-rate pulsed photon fields / Zorloni, Gabriele (Milan Polyech.) ; Ambrožová, Iva (Prague, Nucl. Phys. Inst.) ; Carbonez, Pierre (CERN) ; Caresana, Marco (Milan Polytech.) ; Ebert, Stephan (VKTA, Dresden) ; Olšovcová, Veronika (ELI Beamlines, Dolní Břežany) ; Pitzschke, Andreas (Centr. Hosp. U. Vaudois, Lausanne) ; Ploc, Ondrej (Prague, Nucl. Phys. Inst.) ; Pozzi, Fabio (CERN) ; Silari, Marco (CERN) et al.
Recent advances in laser driven accelerators boosted the development of high dose-rate fast pulsed systems all over the world. The stray radiation comprises primarily high-energy photons, resulting in extremely high dose rates within pico-/femto-second pulses. [...]

Design of the third-generation lead-based neutron spallation target for the neutron time-of-flight facility at CERN / n_TOF Collaboration
The neutron time-of-flight (n_TOF) facility at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN) is a pulsed white-spectrum neutron spallation source producing neutrons for two experimental areas: the Experimental Area 1 (EAR1), located 185 m horizontally from the target, and the Experimental Area 2 (EAR2), located 20 m above the target. The target, based on pure lead, is impacted by a high-intensity 20-GeV/c pulsed proton beam. [...]

Aircraft crew are one of the groups of radiation workers which receive the highest annual exposure to ionizing radiation. Validation of computer codes used routinely for calculation of the exposure due to cosmic radiation and the observation of nonpredictable changes in the level of the exposure due to solar energetic particles, requires continuous measurements onboard aircraft. The lifespan of a particle accelerator includes its final decommissioning and the disposal of potentially activated materials, one of the major challenges faced at accelerator laboratories. This paper discusses the computational and experimental techniques adopted for clearing from regulatory control the superconducting acceleration system of the former CERN Large Electron Positron collider (LEP), consisting of nearly 450 tons of valuable metals.
