In high-energy particle accelerators, circulating particle beams with high intensity interact electromagnetically with their surroundings (i.e., metallic vacuum chambers of various geometries). These electromagnetic interactions, which are typically described through the concept of beam-coupling impedance, can represent a serious issue in terms of stability of the particle beam and heating on the accelerator structures. Studies and mitigation of TMCI in FCC-ee

Previous studies have identified turbulent mode coupling instability (TMCI) as one of the most severe single-bunch instabilities in the FCC-ee collider, potentially limiting its performance. Its threshold is influenced by both transverse and longitudinal wakefields arising from vacuum chamber resistive wall effects, discontinuities, and beam-beam interactions, the latter of which can be seen as a transverse cross-wake force. In this paper, we investigate the TMCI using the most recent collider parameters and an updated impedance model. Selected advances in the accelerator design of the Future Circular Electron-Positron Collider (FCC-ee)
/ FCC Collaboration
In autumn 2023, the FCC Feasibility Study underwent a crucial “mid-term review”. We describe some accelerator performance risks for the proposed future circular electron-positron collider, FCC-ee, identified for, and during, the mid-term review. [...]

Understanding of the new horizontal instability at the PS Booster after LIU
/ Antuono, Chiara (Sapienza Universita e INFN, Roma I (IT)) ; Zannini, Carlo (CERN) ; Rumolo, Giovanni (CERN) ; Asvesta, Foteini (CERN) ; Migliorati, Mauro (Sapienza Universita e INFN, Roma I (IT))
Following the LHC Injectors Upgrade (LIU) project at CERN, the Proton Synchrotron Booster (PSB) has been upgraded to operate with a new injection kinetic energy of 160 MeV and an extraction energy of 2 GeV. To understand the performance of the accelerator in this new energy range, a series of measurements have been conducted, especially devoted to the beam stability to ensure the optimal operation of the machine. A Wireless Method for Beam Coupling Impedance Measurements of the LHC Goniometer
/ Antuono, Chiara (CERN ; U. Rome La Sapienza (main)) ; Migliorati, Mauro (U. Rome La Sapienza (main)) ; Mostacci, Andrea (U. Rome La Sapienza (main)) ; Zannini, Carlo (CERN)
The beam coupling impedance (BCI) of an accelerator component should be ideally evaluated exciting the device with the beam itself. However, this scenario is not always attainable and alternative methods must be exploited, such as the bench measurements techniques. [...]

Recent Advances in the CERN PS Impedance Model and Instability Simulations
/ Joly, Sébastien (U. Rome La Sapienza (main) ; CERN ; istituto nazionale di fisica nucleare) ; Iadarola, Giovanni (CERN) ; Migliorati, Mauro (U. Rome La Sapienza (main)) ; Mounet, Nicolas (CERN) ; Salvant, Benoit (CERN) ; Zannini, Carlo (CERN)
Transverse instability growth rates in the CERN Proton Synchrotron are studied thanks to the recently updated impedance model of the machine. Using this model, macroparticle tracking simulations were performed with a new method well-suited for the slicing of short wakes, which achieves comparable performance to the originally implemented method while reducing the required number of slices by a factor of 5 to 10. CEPC Technical Design Report: Accelerator
/ CEPC Study Group Collaboration
The Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) is a large scientific project initiated and hosted by China, fostered through extensive collaboration with international partners. The complex comprises four accelerators: a 30 GeV Linac, a 1.1 GeV Damping Ring, a Booster capable of achieving energies up to 180 GeV, and a Collider operating at varying energy modes (Z, W, H, and ttbar). FCC-ee Collective Effects and their mitigation
/ Carideo, Emanuela (CERN ; INFN, Rome) ; Zimmermann, Frank (CERN) ; Zobov, Mikhail (LNF, Dafne Light) ; Migliorati, Mauro (INFN, Rome)
The high luminosity foreseen in the future electron-positron circular collider (FCC-ee) necessitates very intense multi-bunch colliding beams with very small transverse beam sizes at the collision points. This requires emittances comparable to those of the modern synchrotron light sources. [...]

One of the major upcoming challenges in particle physics is achieving precise measurements of the Z, W, and H bosons, as well as the top quark. To meet these targets, the next e\textsuperscript+e\textsuperscript- collider complex, FCC-ee, will need to achieve unprecedented luminosities. [...]

Studies and Mitigation of Collective Effects in FCC-ee

In order to achieve a high luminosity in the future electron-positron circular collider (FCC-ee), very intense multi-bunch colliding beams should have nanometer scale transverse beam sizes at the collision points. For this purpose the emittances of the colliding beams are chosen to be very small, comparable to those of the modern synchrotron light sources, while the stored beam currents should be close to the best values achieved in the last generation of particle factories.
