Transfer functions for $Q_A/Q_B$ international regulatory limits for the safe transport of radioactive materials / Frosio, Thomas (SLAC) ; Thomas, Samuel (IRSN, France) ; Endres, Janis ; Eberhardt, Holger ; Louis, Baptiste (IRSN, France) ; Cabianca, Tiberio ; Brown, Iain ; Foster, Matthew ; Menaa, Nabil (CERN) ; Bertreix, Philippe (CERN)
Abstract This paper presents a proposed revision of the International Atomic Energy Agency transport regulations, related to the A 1 and A 2 limit values used to determine the radioactive transport classification. Based on the ‘Q system’, a novel methodology was introduced to derive QA and QB values related to scenarios involving external exposure from a distant source. [...]

Radiological clearance of historical waste from particle accelerators / Svihrova, Lucie (CERN ; Prague, Tech. U.) ; Bauer, Kerstin (CERN) ; Bruno, Luca (CERN) ; Dumont, Gerald (CERN) ; Magistris, Matteo (CERN) ; Menaa, Nabil (CERN) ; Silari, Marco (CERN) ; Ulrici, Luisa (CERN)
This paper presents a detailed methodology for reclassifying radioactive material from particle accelerators as non-radioactive, drawing on experiences at CERN. During particle accelerator decommissioning, the waste is classified based on its radioactivity level where the very-low-level activity material is the potential clearance candidate. [...]

Measurement and simulations of high-energy neutrons through a various thickness of concrete and steel shields using activation detectors at CHARM and CSBF / Nakao, Noriaki (Tokyo Inst. Tech.) ; Sanami, Toshiya (KEK, Tsukuba) ; Kajimoto, Tsuyoshi (Hiroshima U.) ; Yashima, Hiroshi (Kyoto Sangyo U.) ; Froeschl, Robert (CERN) ; Bozzato, Davide (CERN) ; Iliopoulou, Elpida (CERN) ; Infantino, Angelo (CERN) ; Lee, Eunji (Kyushu U.) ; Oyama, Takahiro (KEK, Tsukuba) et al.
A shielding experiment using activation detectors was performed at the CERN High-energy AcceleRator Mixed-field (CHARM) facility and the CERN Shielding Benchmark Facility (CSBF). The protons (24 GeV/c) were bombarded into a 50-cm-thick copper target, and the released neutrons were transmitted through various shields located vertically upward from the target. [...]

In-situ radiological classification and characterization methodology of activated cables in particle accelerators / Dyrcz, Patrycja (CERN) ; Infantino, Angelo (CERN) ; Menaa, Nabil (CERN) ; El-Idrissi, Safouane (CERN) ; Tromel, Christophe (CERN) ; Vincke, Heinz (CERN)
The estimation of induced radioactivity and radiological classification of activated material is necessary throughout the life cycle of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) accelerator. As part of the upgrade to HighLuminosity LHC (HL-LHC), radiation protection assessments need to be performed in order to estimate the radiological hazard during the dismantling activities of the LHC cables. Absolute calibration of BSI monitors in the SPS North Area at CERN / Parsons França, Luana (CERN ; Liverpool U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Welsch, Carsten (Liverpool U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Ahdida, Claudia (CERN) ; Ravotti, Federico (CERN) ; Roncarolo, Federico (CERN) ; Philippon, Florent (CERN) ; Pezzullo, Giuseppe (CERN) ; Zhang, H D (Liverpool U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Bernhard, Johannes (CERN) ; Van Dijk, Maarten (CERN) et al.
Developments in current and future experiments in the SPS North Area (NA) and PS East Area (EA) fixed target beam lines at CERN, including the “Physics Beyond Colliders” (PBC) program, require accurate determination of the number of protons on target (POT). The re-calibration of Beam Secondary Emission Intensity monitors (BSI), recently completed in one of the NA branches, reduced the estimated uncertainty on the absolute POT to a few percent. [...]

In-toto non-destructive assay methodology for the elimination of metallic waste from particle accelerators after melting / Dyrcz, Patrycja (CERN) ; Menaa, Nabil (CERN) ; Magistris, Matteo (CERN) ; Theis, Chris (CERN) ; Bruno, Luca (CERN) ; Dumont, Gerald (CERN) ; Charousset, Renaud (CERN)
Melting of metallic waste reduces the waste volume, allows more accurate radiological characterization, and minimizes handling at the waste production site. This paper proposes a new non-destructive assay methodology to radiologically characterize low- and intermediate-level (LILW) waste before melting. [...]

Radiological characterization for the disposal of a decommissioned LHC external beam dump at CERN / Infantino, Angelo (CERN) ; Harbron, Richard William (CERN) ; Mouret, Renaud (CERN) ; Bertreix, Philippe (CERN) ; Bernardes, Ana-Paula (CERN) ; Bruno, Luca (CERN) ; Calviani, Marco (CERN) ; Dumont, Gerald (CERN) ; El-Idrissi, Safouane (CERN) ; Magistris, Matteo (CERN) et al.
During the last Long Shutdown, a scheduled maintenance period between physics runs, the two Large Hadron Collider (LHC) beam dumps were replaced with upgraded spares modules. It was then decided to conduct an in-house autopsy and a post-irradiation examination of the removed dumps to extract information essential for the 3rd LHC physics run and to aid the design of new generations of beam dumps able to cope with future upgrades of the LHC. Radiological characterisation for the clearance of burnable waste produced at CERN / Harbron, Richard (CERN) ; Charousset, Renaud (CERN) ; Dumont, Gerald (CERN) ; Magistris, Matteo (CERN) ; Menaa, Nabil (CERN) ; Giunio Pisano, Paolo (CERN) ; Theis, Christian (CERN)
Burnable waste produced at CERN during upgrading, maintenance and dismantling campaigns may be contaminated with radioactive nuclides produced through activation of accelerator components. Here, we present a methodology for the radiological characterisation of burnable waste, which takes into account the wide range of potential activation conditions (beam energy, material composition, location, irradiation and waiting time). CERN-MEDICIS: A Review Since Commissioning in 2017 / MEDICIS Collaboration
The CERN-MEDICIS (MEDical Isotopes Collected from ISolde) facility has delivered its first radioactive ion beam at CERN (Switzerland) in December 2017 to support the research and development in nuclear medicine using non-conventional radionuclides. Since then, fourteen institutes, including CERN, have joined the collaboration to drive the scientific program of this unique installation and evaluate the needs of the community to improve the research in imaging, diagnostics, radiation therapy and personalized medicine. Dose equivalent limits for single organs are recommended by the ICRP (International Commission for the Radiological Protection publication 103). These limits do not lend themselves to be measured. [...]
