In this paper, we present experimental results and numerical simulations of trident production, $e^-\rightarrow e^-e^+e^-$, in a strong electromagnetic field. The experiment was conducted at CERN for the purpose of probing the strong-field parameter $\chi$ up to 2.4, using a 200 GeV electron beam penetrating a 400 $\mu$m thick germanium crystal oriented along the $\langle 110\rangle$ axis. High-resolution, low-latency, bunch-by-bunch feedback system for nanobeam stabilization
/ Bett, D.R. (JAI, UK ; CERN) ; Blaskovic Kraljevic, N. (JAI, UK ; Lund U., MAX-lab) ; Bromwich, T. (JAI, UK ; Edinburgh U.) ; Burrows, P.N. (JAI, UK) ; Christian, G.B. (JAI, UK ; Diamond Light Source) ; Perry, C. (JAI, UK) ; Ramjiawan, R. (JAI, UK ; CERN)
We report the design, operation and performance of a high-resolution, low-latency, bunch-by-bunch feedback system for nano-beam stabilisation. The system employs novel, ultra-low quality-factor cavity beam position monitors (BPMs), a two-stage analogue signal down-mixing system, and a digital signal processing and feedback board incorporating an FPGA. Precision Measurement of Trident Production in Strong Electromagnetic Fields
/ Nielsen, Christian F. (Aarhus U.) ; Holtzapple, Robert (Cal. Poly.) ; Lund, Mads M. (Aarhus U.) ; Surrow, Jeppe H. (Aarhus U.) ; Sørensen, Marc B. (Aarhus U.) ; Uggerhøj, Ulrik I. (Aarhus U.)

We demonstrate experimentally that the trident process $e^-\rightarrow e^-e^+e^-$ in a strong external field, with a spatial extension comparable to the effective radiation length, is well understood theoretically. The experiment, conducted at CERN, probes values for the strong field parameter $\chi$ up to 2.4. [...]

Competition between Allowed and First-Forbidden $β$ Decay: The Case of $^{208}$Hg$→^{208}$Tl
/ Carroll, R J (Surrey U.) ; Podolyák, Zs (Surrey U. ; Darmstadt, GSI) ; Berry, T (Surrey U.) ; Grawe, H (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Alexander, T (Surrey U.) ; Andreyev, A N (York U., England ; JAEA, Ibaraki) ; Ansari, S (Cologne U.) ; Borge, M J G (CERN) ; Brunet, M (Surrey U.) ; Creswell, J R (Liverpool U.) et al.
The $β$ decay of $^{208}$Hg into the one-proton hole, one neutron-particle $^{208}_{81}$Tl$_{127}$ nucleus was investigated at CERN-ISOLDE. Shell-model calculations describe well the level scheme deduced, validating the proton-neutron interactions used, with implications for the whole of the N>126, Z<82 quadrant of neutron-rich nuclei. Application of Accelerators and Storage Rings

It is well known from Maxwell theory that electromagnetic radiation is emitted whenever electric charges are accelerated in free space. This radiation assumes quite extraordinary properties whenever the charged particles move at ultrarelativistic speed: The radiation becomes very powerful and tightly collimated in space, and it may easily cover a rather wide spectrum ranging from the THz into the hard X-ray regime.
