An experimental and numerical framework to assess the temperature distribution in complex He II-cooled magnet geometries / Puthran, Kirtana (CERN) ; Borges de Sousa, Patricia (CERN) ; Murberg, Lise (CERN ; Norwegian U. Sci. Tech.) ; Koettig, Torsten (CERN) ; van Weelderen, Rob (CERN)
In the context of the High Luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, a framework implementing experimental techniques and numerical analysis has been developed to systematically assess the temperature distribution in complex He II-cooled composite magnet geometries. The experiments are designed to measure the heat transfer coefficients in the magnet coil layers using coil samples in a stagnant superfluid helium bath. [...]

A magnetic flux expulsion lens (MFEL) has been designed and built at CERN. This device uses closed topology conduction cooling of samples to quantify magnetic flux expulsion of superconductors, and allows for systematic measurements of the cooling dynamics and the magnetic response during the superconducting transition. Effect of Irradiation Temperature and Atmosphere on Aging of Epoxy Resins for Superconducting Magnets / Parragh, David Mate (CERN) ; Scheuerlein, Christian (CERN) ; Martin, Noémie (Lyon U.) ; Piccin, Roland (CERN) ; Ravotti, Federico (CERN) ; Pezzullo, Giuseppe (CERN) ; Koettig, Torsten (CERN) ; Lellinger, Dirk (Unlisted, DE)
The superconducting magnets of future particle accelerators will be exposed to high irradiation doses at cryogenic temperatures. To investigate the effect of irradiation temperature and atmosphere on the aging behavior, we have characterized the changes in thermomechanical properties of six epoxy resins for potential use in superconducting magnets after irradiation up to 20 MGy in ambient air, inert gas, and liquid helium. Semi-Dry Cooling Solutions for Future Superconducting Accelerator Structures / Chioteli, Maria (CERN) ; Koettig, Torsten (CERN) ; Onufrena, Aleksandra (CERN) ; Naydenov, Boyan (CERN) ; Adam, Thomas (CEA INAC, Grenoble) ; Bremer, Johan (CERN)
Cryogenic dry cooling solutions for Superconducting RF cavities allow for synergies with modern cavity production methods based on vacuum coating and A15 SC layer deposition methods. A proof-of-concept cryogenic performance test stand will study relevant parameters of low-temperature cooling loops with respect to the RF performance of a 1.3 GHz prototype cavity. [...]

CERN Based $T_{c}$ Measurement Station for Thin-Film Coated Copper Samples and Results on Related Studies / Fonnesu, Dorothea (CERN ; Siegen U.) ; Bremer, Johan (CERN) ; Koettig, Torsten (CERN) ; Laín-Amador, Lucia (CERN) ; Pereira Carlos, Carlota (CERN) ; Rosaz, Guillaume (CERN) ; Vaaranta, Antti (Helsinki U.)
In the framework of the Future Circular Collider (FCC) Study, the development of thin-film coated superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities capable of providing higher accelerating fields (10 to 20 MV/m against 5 MV/m of LHC) represents a major challenge. The development of a test stand commissioned at CERN for the inductive measurement of the critical temperature (T$_{c}$c) of SC thin-film deposited on copper samples for SRF application is presented in this work. NA62 Liquid Krypton Purity Monitor / Bremer, Johan (CERN) ; Bryman, Douglas (British Columbia U. ; TRIUMF) ; Danielsson, Hans (CERN) ; Falaleev, Valeri (Dubna, JINR ; INFN, Perugia) ; Koettig, Torsten (CERN) ; Kurchaninov, Leonid (TRIUMF) ; Liberadzka-Porret, Joanna (CERN) ; Onufrena, Aleksandra (CERN) ; Velghe, Bob (TRIUMF)
A system for determining the purity of liquid krypton employed in the NA62 rare kaon decay experiment at CERN was developed based on the use of a time projection chamber. The attenuation of drifting ionization electrons from absorption of 511 keV gamma rays in liquid krypton was measured to estimate the purity. [...]

Versatile Beamline Cryostat for the Cryogenic Current Comparator (CCC) for FAIR / Haider, David (Darmstadt, GSI) ; De Gersem, Herbert (Darmstadt, Tech. U.) ; Golm, Jessica (Jena U. ; CERN) ; Koettig, Torsten (CERN) ; Kurian, Febin (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Marsic, Nicolas (Darmstadt, Tech. U.) ; Müller, Wolfgang (Darmstadt, Tech. The Cryogenic Current Comparator (CCC) extends the measurement range of traditional non-destructive current monitors used in accelerator beamlines down to a few nano-amperes of direct beam current. This is achieved by a cryogenic environment of liquid helium around the beamline, in which the beam’s magnetic field is measured with a Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID), which is itself enclosed in a superconducting shielding structure. The Future Circular Collider electron-positron version (FCC-ee$^{+}$) may be the next step towards a next generation of particle colliders. It may include an Experiment for probing ee$^{+}$ collisions using the IDEA (International Detector for Electron-positron Accelerator), or a similar detector, requiring a solenoid enclosing the inner tracking detector. Characterisation of the radiation hardness of cryogenic bypass diodes for the HL-LHC inner triplet quadrupole circuit / Wollmann, Daniel (CERN) ; Bernhard, Axel (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Cangialosi, Chiara (CERN) ; Cerutti, Francesco (CERN) ; D'Angelo, Giorgio (CERN) ; Danzeca, Salvatore (CERN) ; Denz, Reiner (CERN) ; Favre, Mathieu (CERN) ; Garcia Alia, Ruben (CERN) ; Hagedorn, Dietrich (CERN) et al.
The powering layout of the new HL-LHC Nb$_3$Sn triplet circuits is the use of cryogenic bypass diodes, where the diodes are located inside an extension to the magnet cryostat, operated in superfluid helium and exposed to radiation. Therefore, the radiation hardness of different type of bypass diodes has been tested at low temperatures in CERN’s CHARM irradiation facility during the operational year 2018. [...]
